A classic book about flight

If the only Bach you know is "Jonathan Livingston Seagull", forget what you think you think you know about the author. This book, Bach's first, is something entirely different. It's a classic in the tradition of great flight books like "Fate is the Hunter" and "Night Flight"

Written when Bach was an Air National Guard pilot, "Stranger to the Ground" takes you along for what is in essence a very humdrum and ordinary flight as he ferries an F84F from Germany to England. It's fairly uneventful; he passes through a storm, but he's well equipped to handle it. He even claims that the F84 is so easy to fly, anyone could handle it in level flight.

What makes it special is Bach's narration- how he conveys the wonder of it all, and finds the magic in the simple act of flying, and the excitement of those small moments, like finding the coast, sighting the airfield and landing the plane.

If you're not one who finds wonder in the simple act of flight, you may wonder why anyone would read this book. But if you're the type who looks up whenever an aircraft passes overhead, or who always takes the window seat on an airliner, or you're a pilot yourself, this is one of the finest books ever written on what it means to fly.

Few can fly or write as well as Richard Bach.

I first bought "Stranger To The Ground" at it's second printing during the early 1970s. I don't remember why -- Bach was not yet popular as the author of "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" or "There's No Such Place As Far Away." Maybe it was the cover illustration of the silver F-84F Thunderstreak Bach flew over Europe as part of the Air National Guard during the Berlin Crisis. I always was a sucker for a good looking airplane. Whatever it was, I soon realized this was no ordinary tale and that Bach was no ordinary writer. Years [and hundreds of books and authors] later, I feel the same. My copy of "Stranger" is worn and dog-eared [I've just purchased a new one here at Amazon.com]. I've read it to my kids and they've asked me to read it to them again. I've picked it up, time and time again, from the same shelf that holds his other marvelous books, and paged through it, captivated all over again. I sometimes wonder how many great pilots are flying, right now, solely because they read this book when they were still too young to drive. I'll bet they thank Richard Bach every time their gear lifts off the tarmac.

I was there and discovered Jonothan in the night flight

In 1961 the world was about to go to war over a simple, but deadly game of nuclear bluff. The Russians were about to sign a seperate peace treaty with East Germany. So? Well, since the U.S., Brits, France and the Russians were all allies aftrer WWII, they could not unilaterally do that! In the new cold war era however, the Russians, trying to secure their idiological communist empire, perhaps as a buffer to any future invasions from the West, had taken their sector of Berlin...and East Germany, and made it their own...and to prove it they were going to sign a seperate peace without their allies. So, we called their bluff...and within 24 days of notification in the late summer of 1961, thousands of Guardsmen and allied military were activated and put muzzle to muzzle with the Russians and other Easter Block countries with a deadline of January 1, 1962 for the Russians to blink or unleash the dogs of war. Luckily for all of us, they blinked. I was with the 113th TFS from Indiana that flew the Atlantic in F-84Fs and opened Chambley Field in France. We flew the same skies, missions, and aircraft and lousey weather as Richard. We had mixed emotions about the opportunity to fly and test our aircraft for real, but apprehension about leaving our civilian jobs, homes and families to face an potential enemy that only a few years before had been our ally. We all worried through the cold winter night before the deadline, with a one way flight plan and realization that there would be no field left for us to return to if the baloon went up...and, perhaps no world as we knew it either. I think the world learned a lesson from that experience...more need to read about it...and we must never forget. Richard's detailed and flowing discription of the aircraft, arena, bases, missions, and joy of flight stimulating and nostalgic. Whenever I want to relive that little known and appreciated bookmark in history and the personal feeling of the experience, I reread Stranger...it is like an old friend...it also introduced me to a life of adventure, philosophy, mysticism and awe as a fan of this unique writer...he was, and still is an inspiration for my continuing journey of understanding of life, relationships, self examination and love of aviation. He is every-airman, but relates life better than any-man. Bravo Bach!

Management by fact has become an increasingly popular concept in the Software Engineering and Information Technology communities. It is one of the key factors leading organizations to focus attention on measurement and the use of objective information to make decisions. Quantitative performance information is essential to fact-based management. Practical Software Measurement: Objective Information for Decision Makers, describes an approach to management by fact for software project managers based on the concepts of integrating a measurement information model and a measurement process model. While the concepts apply to non-software activities as well, the examples and terminology presented in the book focus on software to facilitate understanding within that community. The information needs of the decision maker drive the selection of software measures and associated analysis techniques. This is the premise behind the widely accepted approaches to software measurement, including Goal/Question/Metric 1 and Issue/Category/Measure 2. Information needs result from the efforts of managers to influence the outcomes of projects, processes, and initiatives towards defined objectives. Information needs are usually derived from two sources: 1) goals that the manager seeks to achieve and, 2) obstacles that hinder the achievement of these goals. Obstacles, or issues, include risks, problems, and a lack of information in a goal related area. Unless there is a manager or other decision-maker with an information need, measurement serves no purpose. The issues faced by a software project manager are numerous. Typically they include estimating and allocating project resources, and tracking progress, and delivering products that meet customer specifications and expectations. A measurement information model defines the relationship between the information needs of the manager and the objective data to be collected, commonly called measures. It also establishes a consistent terminology for basic measurement ideas and concepts, which is critical to communicating the measurement information to decision makers. The information model in Practical Software Measurement (PSM) defines three levels of measures, or quantities: 1) base measures, 2) derived measures, and 3) indicators. It is interesting to note that the three levels of measurement defined in the PSM information model roughly correspond to the three level structures advocated by many existing measurement approaches. Examples include the goal/question/metric 1, factor/criteria/metric 3, and issue/category/measure 2) approaches already in use within the software community. A similar approach for defining a generic data structure for measurement was developed by Kitchenham, et al, who defined their structure as an Entity Relationship Diagram 4. An effective measurement process must address the selection of appropriate measures as well as provide for effective analysis of the data that is collected. The measurement process model describes a set of related measurement activities that are generally applicable in all circumstances, regardless of the specific information needs of any particular situation. The process consists of four iterative measurement activities: Establish, Plan, Perform, and Evaluate. This process is similar to the commonly seen Plan-Do-Check-Act 5 cycle. Recognition of a need for fact-based, objective information leads to the establishment of a measurement process for a project or an organization. The specific information needs of the decision makers and measurement users drive the selection and definition of appropriate measures during the measurement planning activity. The resulting measurement approach instantiates a project specific information model, and identifies the base measures, derived measures, and indicators to be employed, and the analysis techniques to be applied, to address the project’s prioritized information needs. As the measurement plan is implemented, or performed, the required measurement data is collected and analyzed. The information product that results from the perform measurement activity is provided to the decision makers. Feedback from these measurement users help to evaluate the effectiveness of the measures and measurement process so that they can be improved on a continuing basis. The basic concepts presented in this book are evolved from extensive measurement experience and prior research. They were previously introduced in sequentially released versions of Practical Software Measurement 2, and were formalized in ISO/IEC Standard 15939 - Software Measurement Process 6. The measurement process model and measurement terminology work from ISO/IEC 15939 have also been adopted as the basis of a new Measurement and Analysis Process Area in the Software Engineering Institute’s Capability Maturity Model - Integrated (CMM-I) 7. This book explains how software development and maintenance organizations can implement a viable measurement process based on the proven measurement concepts of ISO/IEC 15939 and the CMM-I in a practical and understandable manner. In simplistic terms, implementing an objective "measurement by fact" process for a software intensive project encompasses defining and prioritizing the information needs of the project decision makers through the development of a project specific information model, and then tailoring and executing a project specific set of measurement process activities. The PSM approach to accomplishing this integrates prior experience and research from many sources across many application domains. To enhance understandability, the authors limit further references to suggestions for additional reading on specific topics.

The Standard for Software Measurement Programs

I would rate this book ****** if it were possible. If you are looking for material on how to start a "software metrics program", look no further. This is the ultimate reference on software measurement initiatives. The PSM method is compatible with the CMMI (Measurement & Analysis Process Area) and the foundation for the ISO/IEC 15939 standard. All of the authors are recognized authorities in software measurement and process improvement. Dr. Barry Boehm (COCOMO author) has written the foreword. The PSM process is sponsored by the DoD and the U.S. Army. The book itself is comprehensive, well-written, and easy to read. It provides ready-to-use templates such as "Measurement Construct Template", "Project Measurement Plan Outline", and "Data Verification Checklist". Chapter outline:
1 - Measurement: Key Concepts and Practices
2 - Measurement Information Model
3 - Plan Measurement
4 - Perform Measurement
5 - Analysis Techniques
6 - Evaluate Measurement
7 - Establish and Sustain Commitment

Off-the-shelf processes for CMMM level 3 and above orgs

There is a wealth of material available from the PSM site, including the PSM Insight application and PSM Guidebook. However this book is not redundant because it is structured as a clearly written introduction to practical software measurement, that includes excellent guidance for implementing it into your organization. In addition, the 304 pages that comprise this book manages to convey the information contained in the existing PSM documentation, and does so much more succinctly.
I found the most valuable parts of this book to be the clearly described measurement model, and the way the authors distinguish between data that is useful to projects and organizational data collection and analysis. This material places PSM in context and is a sound starting point for an organizational SQA initiative.
The case studies reinforces the mechanics of PSM, and also contain advice and pointers for implementing enterprise-wide measurement. Although I've been following the PSM initiative almost since its inception and have read all of the copious materials available, I still gained much from this book. If you're establishing an SQA function or striving for CMM level 4 or above you'll find this book invaluable. The URLs provided will lead to even more material, including a free Windows-based software tool that fully supports the practical software measurement process.

This is a life saver!!!

We as users of the PSM with years of experience in the quality and measurements world tend to over complicate the measurement system we develop. This book is a yardstick and is a good tool to ground you when you are creating the measurements. It keeps your mind in the more simple and effective road to resolving the issues. Remember the old saying, "Keep it simple stupid (KISS)!"; this one helps guide you to accomplishment of this goal.

SuperCompetent is a Super Important Read!

I've grown weary and leery of time management books and productivity systems that promise long but deliver short when it comes to practical ideas, tools, and strategies for the overstressed, over-committed business owner or executive. But my wife bought Stack's latest book and layed it on my desk. I read it over a long weekend and it's already made a significant impact on how I structure my time, both personally and professionally.
I particularly enjoyed her advice on how to protect my time; an area I really struggle with. I also appreciated Stack's take on how to develop a sharper focus toward that which is truly important.
Whether you're just launching your career or you're knee-deep in the hoopla of trying to run a company in these insanely crazy times, you'll pull a great deal of actionable ideas from SuperCompetent. A must read!

There's a lot of fluff in this book

This is definitely not a super-competent book. I bought it because of the glowing reviews, but that was a mistake on my part. The author no doubt has a thriving productivity consulting business, but this book definitely did NOT help me to improve my productivity.

The concept of the book seemed reasonable -- six characteristics of productive people. But I was surprised by the book contents. There was page after page after page of how to click around in Microsoft Outlook, or how to use various features for emails, meetings, planning, with general references to various websites, and so on. All pretty light stuff.

What struck me most was the large amount of text (fluff) devoted to each bullet point (many of which were merely descriptive of a situation, but not actionable in any real sense). I felt like someone brainstormed a bunch of points around a concept, and then just manufactured one or two big paragraphs (eg, a whole kindle page) talking about or around the point. I read and read and read, and could recognize (or imagine) the situations she was describing, but having understood the corporate situation she described, now what? If the author said anything much at all about the situation, it was obvious stuff.

I regret buying this book, but it's too late for me to return it to Amazon. Chalk it up to experience I guess. In contrast, if productivity is what you're after, I just finished Eat That Frog!, which is a productivity book as well. It costs about 1/4 of the SuperCompetent price, and is FAR more useful as a productivity enhancer. It contains many good productivity techniques, which are all concisely explained. No fluff in that book.

Another excellent book is How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life (Signet), probably the grandmaster time management and productivity book (although not available on Kindles, as far as I know).

Honestly, I would not recommend this SuperCompetent book to anyone. There are many far better productivity and time management books out there, for less money too.

Improve your life. This book gives you skills to reach your highest productivity.

Do you want to rise up to your best self and your highest productivity? This book can help you. On page 15, Author Laura Stack emphasizes that the "SuperCompetent know exactly why [they] work hard and what [they're] trying to achieve." On page 17, she emphasizes the power of having a "mission not an agenda . . . a mission keeps [one] from getting lost in the minutia." On page 97, she emphasizes that the SuperCompetent do not allow themselves to be distracted by various technological distractions (including Facebook, email, and YouTube.) She noted that the average American office worker loses 28% of the workday to distractions. This book is filled with strategies to improve your productivity. She even talks about how, during business travel, you can make the plane your mobile office. Laura provides action planning worksheets, and on page 209 she demonstrates the qualities of perseverance. This is a truly a helpful book.

About the Author

W. Richard (Dick) Scott received his PhD from the University of Chicago and is currently Professor Emeritus in the Department of Sociology with courtesy appointments in the Graduate School of Business, Graduate School of Education, and School of Medicine at Stanford University. He has spent his entire professional career at Stanford, serving as chair of the Sociology Department (1972–1975), as director of the Training Program on Organizations and Mental Health (1972–1989), and as director of the Stanford Center for Organizations Research (1988–1996).

Scott is an organizational sociologist who has concentrated his work on the study of professional organizations, including educational, engineering, medical, research, social welfare, and nonprofit advocacy organizations. During the past three decades, he has concentrated his writing and research on the relation between organizations and their institutional environments. He is the author or editor of about a dozen books and more than 200 articles and book chapters.

He was elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine (1975), served as editor of the Annual Review of Sociology (1987–1991), and as president of the Sociological Research Association (2006–2007). Scott was the recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Management and Organization Theory Division of the Academy of Management in 1988, the Distinguished Educator Award from the same Division in 2013, and of the Richard D. Irwin Award for Distinguished Scholarly Contributions to Management from the Academy of Management in 1996. In 2000, the Section on Organization, Occupations and Work of the American Sociological Association created the W. Richard Scott Award to annually recognize an outstanding article-length contribution to the field. He has received honorary doctorates from the Copenhagen School of Business (2000), the Helsinki School of Economics and Business (2001), and Aarhus University in Denmark (2010).

clear overview

Good overview of institutionalism and organizational analysis. Missing is critical realism and its impact on institution theory. Lancaster style discourse theory has a lot to offer this field, and it wish it were engaged in this book. But I'll use this book for my institution theory graduate class.

What a total waste of money

What a total waste of money. I can't believe the hyperbolic reviews of this book - they must be from all of this friends in the industry. You get no insight into the art or craft of editing, and if I knew that the title "In the Blink of an Eye" was going to be literal - he devotes a large part of the book to discussing how humans blinking is like editing - I would have definitely passed this one up. Half of the book is an afterwards about "digital filmmaking" that tells you nothing other than "digital filmmaking is cheaper, and easier!" This book needs to be put out to pasture.

Excellent and original when first published and maybe when republished, but there is only one point. Learning how to apply it is everything and this can only be done over time and practice.

Baffled!

I'm still trying to figure out why some of the people here have given this book negative reviews. Of course, I respect people's opinions and the fact they might not necessarily jibe with my own all the time but I have to say that for anyone to say that they thought the book was a waste of time is just dumbfounding to me.

This book is a transcript of a lecture given by Walter Murch, award winning editor of several classic films, most notably The Conversation, The English Patient and Apocalypse Now. The first thing that hit me about the book was how well written it was. It's an easy read but Murch is eloquent and engaging enough to make this an extremely enjoyable read through.

Anyone looking for a book describing to you exactly how to edit a film is going to be disappointed with this because that's not what this book is about. Murch assumes that you already know how to edit, at least in the technical sense. It's about the ideas and philosophies that go into it and how to prepare for it beforehand. Anybody can learn how to edit a film but to do it in a fresh and exciting way that make the story of the film you are editing flow naturally and logically is what Murch is attempting to speak of. His theory about the blink of an eye (which I will leave you to read about, if you are at all interested) is something I never thought of and actually served to make me reconsider my views on editing.

Murch is an old school editor but he takes the time to praise the move from analog to digital editing in the book's second half, an inevitable change that has been a long time coming. It's nice to see someone from the old school embracing the new technologies and give a candid write up about the systems pros and cons.

I found this book to be very well put together and I really enjoyed reading all he had to say. It's further proof that we need to heed the words of the masters before they are no longer with us as I can barely imagine any of the young, fresh out of film school editors having anything this meaningful and important to say about the editing process.

Beth Shriver received a degree in social work and psychology from the University of Nebraska. She worked as a caseworker for Boulder County Department of Social Services before starting a family. Beth's family live in Texas after moving from their first home in Colorado. She followed her passion and now writes fulltime.

Not your typical Amish fiction

Elsie Yoder and her family have lived in Texas for a year. They moved from Virginia to Texas after land got scarce in Virginia, and the young men in their community had problems finding land.Sadly though they weren't always accepted by the locals in Texas, and were even harassed To top things off Elsie's sister Katie had run away six months ago with Jake, someone that Elsie had held feelings for, so now she feels bitter and hurt. Gideon Lapp has always been interested in Elsie, but she feels she is tainted, can she learn to put her bitterness aside, and move on, and allow Gideon into her life?

After reading the first book in the Touch of Grace series and loving it, I couldn't wait to dive into "Grace Given" and all I can say is I wasn't disappointed As a fan of Amish fiction sometimes the storylines seem to run together, not so with "Grace Given." First of all it was interesting that they moved from Virginia to Texas, I thought the setting of Texas a bit unique, but it was the heckling and the threatening demeanor of the three Englisher men in the blue sports car in the prologue that gripped me making me wonder what sort of storyline the author had planned. From that first page I couldn't put the book down! I could easily understand Elsie's feelings of bitterness and hurt, as well as betrayal. The harassment that was woven into the story really set a different tone for this book, making it a standout story. Fans of Amish fiction will enjoy this story, but anyone who enjoys a story about faith,forgiveness, family, harassment and secrets kept will enjoy this one. If you have never read an "Amish" story I think you're going to find yourself pleasantly surprised with this one!

A different kind of Amish novel with a powerful message of Grace!

If you understand the Amish people at all, you know that they don't like conflict and will avoid all acts of vengeance or involving the police to deal with any issues they have. They are a peaceful people and prefer to let God deal out the judgements if laws are broken. However when a group of Amish people settle in Texas, a group of English teens are about to make sure they get the message that they are not wanted. Knowing that the Amish will not retaliate, they first come across Elsie and her sister Katie Yoder, walking home one day. They begin to verbally assault them with all kinds of derogatory comments and proceed to leer at them. Katie and Elsie both run for their farm and agree not to tell anyone about what just happened.

Yet once a lie begins it becomes harder and harder to keep it a secret. Now that Katie has left her family along with Jake, the boy Elsie had believed had feelings for her to live among the English. Elsie is left not only to deal with her hurt feelings of being betrayed by her sister and Jake and now has to face continued harassment from the group of English teens that have found an easy mark with Elsie. She finds solace in studying the Martyrs Mirror, an old book that takes about the persecution of the Amish people with her friend Gideon Lapp. Only Gideon wishes his friendship with Elsie may in fact turn into love at some point. However dealing with her heartache with Jake, puts those plans on the back burner and creates a door for Jake's brother Mose to enter with Elsie as they have a common ground for conversation.

In the second book of the Touch of Grace series by Beth Shriver, Grace Given teaches us all how to deal with situations in life that prove difficult. Whether it's a broken heart, a betrayal from a family member or even being harassed, the grace God provides never comes back empty handed. This was such a different Amish novel to read, in that dealing with the harassment from the English teens was something you often wonder about when the Amish community moves into a new location and can create animosity among the residents that live there especially when the Amish start new business opportunities that create a need for their products and services over the English ones. A well written novel that completely captivated me from start to finish and can't wait to read the next one, Healing Grace which the reader is given a glimpse into at the conclusion of this novel.

I received Grace Given by Beth Shriver compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance and Realm Publishers for my honest review and have to rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars. The story was a lot different that your typical Amish novels and dealt with a lot of issues facing the world today in our own communities. It just shows how the Amish would likely have handled it with a touch of grace instead of retaliation like most would.

Another home run for Amish Author Beth Shriver

Book 2 of Grace Given is a continuation in the Touch of Grace series. A very heartwarming and beautiful book. Elsie Yoder is sill mourning over her sister Katie running away from home. Elsie withdraws from almost everyone. However there is still one person who can get through to Elsie and that is Gideon Lapp!!! Elsie has a bad memory- but has shared that memory with no one. Some young "englisher" men taunt and harrass the people in the Amish Community at one point even starting a fire and burning one man's crops. What does Elsie doe?? Does Elsie confide in Gideon- to what she has witnessed these young men doing or does Elsie keep it to herself?? Does Katie come back home- and is Katie now married to Jake???

I loved this book - definitely a five star book!!! Keep writing Beth Shriver- I love your books!!!
