Kayla, Antoinette, and Val are a trio whose unlikely friendship was formed 20 years ago when they each rented a room in the same house. Val and Kayla were fast friends, but, despite Kayla's persistence, Antoinette kept her distance--until one night when her desire for a midnight swim inaugurated an annual ritual and cemented their bond. On a remote point on the island of Nantucket, the three women spend one night each Labor Day weekend drinking champagne, eating lobster, skinny-dipping, and baring their souls. One of the secrets revealed during their twentieth get-together launches a chain of events that changes them all forever. Antoinette swims out to sea and never returns, and as they search for her, wondering if she is alive, a complex web of deceptions (both intentional and unintended) begins to unravel. Though the characters' thoughts and actions seem at times a bit unrealistic, the novel is fast paced and suspenseful enough to keep readers interested. A likely candidate for summer-vacation reading. Such a disappointing ending-spoilers in review

I loved this story line that hooked me immediately however the ending was was beyond disappointing. First of all I couldn't stand Antoinette`s character. She was such a coward in her life always running away or giving up from her problems. In the end she pleaded for Kayla to give her the second chance she needed, but it was so undeserving!!! She seduced Kaylas high school son for gosh sakes!!!! Then she ruined so many lives with her decisions. I can go on and on with how messed up this book ended but Antoinette not having to 'pay penance' for any of her disgusting, cowardess, deceiving behavior just passed me off. I want to jump inside that book and hug Theo and tell him the truth. He's a 18 year old adult and Wanted to love and raise his child. His mother should have recognized this and told him. I'm trying to like your books Elin Hildebrand, but 3 out of four endings have not been good. Left me frustrated beyond belief!!!

Needs a Sequel **SPOILERS**

This was a typical Hilderbrand read - a beach book - as she describes her writing. Although less character development than usual, the book moves along plausibly until the last 10%. Here, Kayla seems to forget the lessons she's learned throughout the book and decides, despite betrayals by her so-called friends, to protect a secret. What?
The plot is that one of the friends goes missing during the friends' annual night swim and Kayla is set up by the friends to look like a murderer.
So, when the woman is located and Kayla is asked to identify her, she does. She decides to keep the secret. This is where the mind-bending begins. No, it's not a secret! The police will close the case and the public will know that the missing presumed dead woman has been found alive and living one island over. The woman may have moved, but she still needs medical care and that news will get out. Kayla sets herself up for her son and her husband to discover she's betrayed them again.
Or, Kayla acts like she's agreeing with the friend and will then rush out the door and find the nearest mental health professional to put the woman on a 72-hour hold because nothing she's done is the act of a healthy mind. The third friend will be found complicit in the conspiracy and get her just desserts, including disbarment.
Either way, Nantucket Nights needs a sequel for the author to finish the story. Beach reads by definition don't make the reader have to think.

COMPELLING

A VERY GOOD FRIEND TURNED ME ONTO ELIN HILDERBRAND, AND BEING ON VACATION IN MEXICO IS LIKE A SUMMER READ! The only problem I had was that towards the end,the last 100 pages or so, I cold not stop and was AWAKE until after 2AM. THe wonderful "beginning" of a long term "woman" friendship was beautiful to say the least: but I thought "VAL' S BETRAYEL UNFORGIVABLE!!! To throw her dear friend under the bus is NOT what friends do ever! Women are natural born nurturers! I don't want to spoil the ending, but "knowing" KAYLA, she is "Earth Mother". I wish there was a sequel, so Val could and should get her come-uppance! She is a selfish, thoughtless,-no she thought it out, so thoughtless is the wrong word!!!!! She is a poor excuse of a friend, confidante, and ARETHA' S DEFINITION OF A WOMAN WHO DESERVES RESPECT!!!! Kayla is questionable, but deep down does what's right. Antoinette deserves peace in her life, and a way to "forgive" herself. I still would recommend this book because sometimes "friends" change over 20 years.
