A charming book for Moon lovers

As long as I can remember, the moon has enchanted me.

That slivery splendour shining down at me, I have always wondered what is it made of. How was it formed? What does it look like up close? How big is it? How far is it?

Through the years, those questions have been answered, but that did not mean the moon still did not intrigue me. I have collected books on the subject of the Sky. However, thinking I had every book on the subject I was excited to come across this little gem.

This book is a charming collection of facts, poems of everything you ever wanted to know about the moon.

The Moon Watcher's companion has a comprehensive encyclopaedia of lunar terminology. A timeline of lunar explorations and three sections that detail the moon's faces, phases, and known facts.

This book has put together a wonderful blend of myth, folklore, poems. It is beautifully anchored by l interesting lunar science.

This book is necessary in any Pagan/Wiccan's library or anyone who wants a little knowledge of that splendour in the sky.

Stephen Hinshaw, PhD, is an internationally recognized research investigator of child and adolescent disorders, award-winning teacher, and author of more than 280 research articles and chapters plus 12 books. A comprehensive overview that doesn't read like a textbook. Not the only book you need, but you do need it!

Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review, but all opinions here are my own.

Part of me is always looking for the perfect ADHD book, even though I know it doesn’t exist.

This may, however, be the perfect ADHD *overview*. It’s not all there is to know, but it is, as the title suggests, what everyone needs to know about ADHD. Not only that, it’s easy to read and weighs in at just under 200 pages.

The greatest value of this book isn’t even the ADHD crash course the authors so skillfully provide. The FAQ-style format will prepare readers with responses to others’ questions as well as their own. Remain open about your or your child’s ADHD for long enough and you’ll know exactly what I mean. With so much conflicting information and sensationalist reporting out there, a reasonable and comprehensive layman’s overview is long overdue.

I especially appreciated the nuanced perspective on recent surges in ADHD diagnoses among American children. The chapter exploring “who you are and where you live” leaves no room for black-and-white arguments. A close read reveals no single truth: yes, accountability laws that defund failing schools are correlated with increased ADHD diagnoses, not to mention increased use of stimulant medication. Yes, diagnosis rates dropped when the carrots of Race to the Top replaced the sticks of No Child Left Behind. However, that data is open to interpretation, and while overdiagnosis is certainly possible, it doesn’t delegitimize ADHD.

This balanced presentation of facts won’t validate any battle cries, but it may be our best bet for responding to those extreme viewpoints. Like most issues, ADHD — and our knowledge of it — contains many gray areas. I found it impossible to maintain a bias while reading this book. Hinshaw and Ellison offer their own interpretations, but they also explain why certain areas remain gray. For example, sometimes ethical issues prevent the controlled studies that would answer some of the toughest questions.

That said, I struggled with the authors’ treatment of ADHD in women and girls: specifically, the suggestion that boys with ADHD outnumber girls two or two-and-a-half to one, with the gender gap closing by adulthood. But perhaps this is informed by my own experience as a girl who struggled from a very young age, suffering in increasing silence as I reached middle and high school.

I’ve also read conflicting information on some forms of behavior therapy for children. Specifically, my personal experience and research discourages the use of external rewards and punishment, sticker charts, etc.

The authors do acknowledge this problem, saying “the difficulty for children is to maintain their progress [outside] the tightly managed environment.” I myself excelled in the structured environments of grade school, college, and family. Shedding these supports in my 20s, I had no capacity to cope with my ADHD as it affected my adult life.

Overall, this is an essential read for any educated consumer seeking ADHD diagnosis and treatment. The book focuses more on childhood ADHD than adult ADHD, but there’s enough general information to give both groups an excellent foundation. If you’re struggling with questions about your or a loved one’s ADHD — including your response to others’ unsolicited questions and opinions — this book is for you.

The only book you will ever need to understand and treat ADHD

I was looking for a book that would explain ADHD in a clear manner and would lay out the pros and cons of medication. This is it! I can't believe how easy this book is to read. Stephen Hinshaw and Katherine Ellison do an excellent job explaining the brain chemistry that causes ADHD, how a parent can get a diagnosis, and why it's important to diagnose ADHD early. They take an impassionate approach to the question of taking drugs, but also discuss other approaches to controlling it, such as counseling and exercise. Plus, they are funny! I loved the dedication: "We dedicate [the book] to anyone who has ever wondered whether the occasional joy of spontaneity are worth the annual costs of replacing lost sunglasses, keys, and cell phones, and to everyone willing to make the effort to understand, appreciate, and occasionally forgive the blessings and challenges of neurodiversity." This is a must-have for anyone with ADHD, with a child who has ADHD, or someone with a hyperactive child. Highly recommended.

Missed Opportunity

I was excited when I saw the title for this book. Anyone who has done Active Directory administration, especially in big environments, knows the benefits that can come from being able to work with automated processes. Windows PowerShell is a perfect companion for AD, which is why the AD cmdlets were some of the first to be developed. The ability to take complicated AD management processes and simplify them down to custom commands or restrict administration to just the tasks needed is very powerful.

I should have seen it coming from the comment in the Introduction from the author that he was not trying to teach everything about AD or PowerShell. Unfortunately, this book really does neither subject well. I reads more like a manual for AD PowerShell cmdlets than a topic level book. At one point, the author lists 7 pages of parameters for a command. Certainly, that is the kind of thing is better referenced in a help file than listed verbatim in the book (especially since the list was probably outdated by the time the book shipped). In some cases, I think the help file for those cmdlets is actually more useful because of the number of examples provided.

The book is divided into chapters based on AD technologies (promoting DCs, managing DNS, managing users, etc.), but only goes into the barest detail on how to do that, with minimal discussion on why you would want to do it or how PowerShell changes the game for long time AD admins. One of the previous reviewers mentioned not reading the book on a computer because you may be tempted to just copy and paste the PowerShell samples -- my opinion is that IS exactly what the book was designed for. The author even includes parameters in some examples that aren't necessary or don't work in the example context while pointing out that you can include them because "it won't hurt" and they may be valid in some cases. I personally don't think that AD PowerShell commands are the kind of thing that I want admins to run who don't understand how the command works or what the different options are doing.

The scripts in the book are very basic and mostly just wrappers around oneliners. The best scripts that the author includes are actually from Ashley McGlone, a Premier Field Service Engineer at Microsoft who did an awesome series on PowerShell and AD at Microsoft Virtual Academy. THERE is a good series if you want to learn how PowerShell can be used to manage Active Directory.

There was only one chapter on AD Cloud management, and that revolved mostly around getting connected to Azure to deploy a virtual machine with AD on it. There was no discussion of managing Azure AD or how a hybrid on-premise-Cloud AD solutions would work or what advantages or disadvantages there were. Azure AD is not the same thing as on premise AD. Any organization that is running Office 365 already has an Azure AD and that management becomes even more important in those cases.

I wish this book had been more about how PowerShell can help with some of the issues that have been traditionally difficult for Active Directory management with the GUIs or providing automation solutions that make reporting or troubleshooting easier. Instead, it was a book for copy and paste admins -- a dangerous subject for that type of administration.

I wanted to like this book because I think this is a topic that could be really powerful, but I would hesitate to recommend this book either because it wouldn't expend sufficiently on what is already available in the help files or it would provide just enough information to the dangerous.

A thorough tour of most of the tasks of AD admin using Powershell.

Everything in the Microsoft flavored sysadmin world is going Powershell, so if you're still a click-Next admin you're not being as productive as you could be (paraphrased from Jeffery Snover).

The title of this book was right up my alley: I am on the AD admin team of a large enterprise, and I use Powershell for many of my daily tasks. Although I've been using posh for nearly 2 years I still have a lot of room to improve. I try to read Powershell books on the weekends so I was glad when this title arrived. But I must admit to being a little disappointed once I started reading. This is not a book to "take you to the next level" but it is a thorough tour of most of the tasks of AD admin using Powershell.

I can see two audiences for this book: 1. Admins new to Powershell who want to follow along with a very knowledgeable instructor as they demonstrate the steps needed to build an AD infrastructure from the ground up. This is exactly what this book accomplishes; in fact I believe it was written step by step as the author built a home lab using almost nothing but Powershell. The problem for this green audience is that many things are assumed - for example there are a few custom cmdlets that appear with sparse explanation. 2. The other audience is made up of sysadmins who are more experienced but may not work in AD with Powershell often enough to internalize all of the commands and syntax and need a reference full of examples. I can see many admins copy-pasting from this book into the Powershell IDE - and there's nothing wrong with that, as long as it's a learning experience.

As for me, I am more in the second audience and will keep this book on hand as a reference. But for my fellow admins looking for an introduction to AD administration with Powershell, this will leave some knowledge gaps that you will have to fill elsewhere. Maybe that isn't such a bad thing, as it should cause you to want to learn even more.

Needless to say he has been 12 years MVP at Microsoft and wrote a lot of books I used to start on my career to become a System Administrator.
Target audience:
Who is this book for? Should I buy this book?
I will be straight here, this book absolutely requires you to have Medium Knowledge of AD (Active Directory) and Beginner knowledge of Powershell. (More on this in Book content)
This book is absolutely perfect if you started using PowerShell or plan to start using it and want to delve deep into managing AD using the command line.
Book Content
This whole book is a “do yourself” example. You should be aware that the book has no information regarding how to set up your environment and goes on the premises that you have the know-how to set your own virtual test laboratory and get working on the examples from the book.
Even when you get an information on the test laboratory it is never in-depth, so take that into account.
Like I said this book requires Medium knowledge in the field of AD (Active Directory), this is because the book is structured on a basic schema:

1. Task to do
2. Short Explanation of “Task” Role
3. Example doing the task using GUI (optional)
4. Example of doing the task using Powershell
5. Example of Powershell in a more “friendly” manner (basically same Powershell command/script written in a more readable way)
Thus it will never go into deep dives regarding AD or Powersheel, but instead it will give you a short information about it and what it goes on a global level and then gives you an example to follow.
Conclusion
The book is 257 pages long (short read), and it’s definitely a book to go throw by “trial by fire”; meaning that it’s best to get it on paperback or on your kindle/tablet and not on your PC, so you will not be tempted to just copy-paste the commands/scripts.
This is best because you want to have your Lab set-up and actually do and write all the Powershell commands and script there yourself. If you’re new to Powershell this will help you a lot, since it’s so unforgiving on the syntax used, you will get a lot of errors but throw that practice you will get the hang of it and become better proficient in it.
Thus I would recommend this book to anyone that is currently working with AD and wants to explore Powershell and leave the GUI behind.
I would have liked if the authors of books like this would actually include a tutorial on how to set-up your test environment, this would help a lot more people to go into books like this and try them.

About the Author
John M. Nicholas Professor Of Management Science Loyola University-Chicago Nicholas received his PhD in Industrial Engineering from Northwestern University and has a BS in Aeronautical Engineering and an MBA in Systems Analysis from the University of Illinois. He is author of "Managing Business and Engineering Projects", a Prentice Hall text. Nicholas has taught for 18 years at Loyola, at the undergraduate and MBA level and has worked in or consulted with many companies, of note-Continental Illinois Bank, Price Waterhouse, ITT, and Lockheed Aircraft.

This book is a step by step guide of the japanese system of production. Subjects that are very obscure in other books are depicted with remarkable simplicity. This is a good textbook for an international competitive manufacturing class.

Lean: An earlier book that tells it better

I don't know how the lean community could have missed this excellent book. Maybe it's because the word lean is "hidden" in the subtitle. But the bulk of the book is a comprehensive and right-on-target discussion of lean's most essential features. Part II (273 pp.) thoroughly and intelligently presents lean's fundamentals in six chapters: Small-lot production; Setup-time reduction; Maintaining and improving equipment; Pull production systems; Focused factories and group technology; Work cells and cellular manufacturing; and Standard operations. (This is unlike so many other lean books that focus more on things like how to study, organize, and prepare for lean than on lean's methods of actually changing processes to improve competitive customer response.)
Besides those "lean core" chapters, the author has included chapters on how the accounting systems must change--so that conventional performance measures support rather than thwart the lean agenda. This book should be widely used in classrooms of business schools and industrial engineering departments--and should serve as a key source of lean training in manufacturing companies.

About the Author
Fanny Britt is a playwright, author and translator. She has a dozen plays to her credit. She has also translated over fifteen contemporary plays and several other works of literature. She writes children’s books and has published, among others, the Félicien series with La Courte Échelle. Jane, the Fox and Me is her first graphic novel. She lives in Montreal with her family.

Isabelle Arsenault is a very talented Quebec illustrator, who has garnered an impressive number of awards and international recognition. She has illustrated several books, including Le coeur de monsieur Gauguin (Governor General’s Award) and My Letter to the World and Other Poems (Governor General’s Award Finalist, IRA Children’s Choices), and she has won the Grand Prix for illustration (Magazines du Québec) for six years running.

Please get this

This book is just amazing. I have two pre-teen step children (fraternal twins) and find myself loathing their introduction to middle school, make up, intelligence, etc, etc, etc, etc. I bought this book for one of them and read it before wrapping it up, taking me about 15 minutes to do. Then I thought about it every day for days upon days. A book that appears to be so simple, that packs what I understand to be a very loaded and complex message about fitting in, self acceptance, self image and perceptions in general.

I still hate middle school.

Outstanding literature for young women

Gorgeous. Gorgeous. Gorgeous. That's really all that needs to be said, in my opinion. But the wonderful message it carries for young women who find themselves unable to 'fit in', is worth noting. While this type of story certainly isn't new, the way the author weaves in her love for a particular piece of classic literature (Jane Eyre), is novel and intriguing. I found myself borrowing it from my pre-teen daughter, to whom I'd given it as a gift. My hope is that this book will become something of a family heirloom. It's really that gorgeous.

I love this book: the writing, the illustrations, the humanity. And there is a fox! I don't know if all girls (even the mean ones) fall prey to other mean girls. If only I had had Jane Eyre tell me that I was not a sausage, life would have been easier. I want to place this in every pediatrician's office throughout the land.

Overtly biased account of British media

This detailed study looks at the British press's portrayal of the EU in the year before the 1997 General Election and during the British EU presidency of 1998. From the start, the authors admit to what they call an `overt as well as ideological pro-European underpinning'. (This incidentally reveals that they make the familiar EU supporters' confusion between Europe and the European Union.)
Their description of the articles that they analyse is often highly tendentious. They construe praise for any European country's achievements as `pro-Europe', again meaning pro-EU. They describe as `vague yet highly emotional' and `Europhobic' the legally correct statement that "No government has the right to give away sovereignty. Our sovereignty does not belong to politicians. It belongs to the people." They write that calling Greece poverty-stricken is `inadmissibly xenophobic'. So we can easily see how they are able to dismiss all the coverage of the EU by the Times, the Telegraph, the Mail, the Express and the Sun as xenophobic.
They also accuse these papers of `Germanophobia'. Their evidence for this? That these papers dare to assert that Germany retains its historic ambitions to expand. The authors have apparently discovered a novelty: a capitalist class that has no desire to expand.
So this book shows how empty EU supporters' accusations of xenophobia are. We should not accept our enemy's definitions. Opposition to the EU is extremely widespread - we have to work with all those who oppose it. In the Second World War, the Soviet Union did not hold Churchill's past against him. Similarly, we must welcome patriotic allies in our fight for national independence, and we should concentrate our fire on those who back the EU against our nation. The struggle to retain our sovereignty is a national one.
