A great purchase for any dog lover!

I love this calendar.

I follow Doug the Pug on Instagram and I thought he was so cute, that I had to get this calendar. I also have his T-Shirt haha.

Anyway, I love that the first section has the last six months of the year with enough space in the days to write appointments, etc. I'm looking forward to January when I can see the big pictures!

About the Author
David Starkey is Professor of English and Director of the Creative Writing Program at Santa Barbara City College.  He is the editor of two collections of creative writing pedagogy, Teaching Writing Creatively (1998) and Genre by Example: Writing What We Teach (2001), and he has been active in all four genres.  His poetry collections include Adventures of the Minor Poet (2007), Ways of Being Dead: New and Selected Poems (2006), and Fear of Everything (2000).  His fiction has appeared in American Literary Review, Rio Grande Review, Sou’wester and in the anthology Blue Cathedral: Contemporary Fiction for the New Millennium.  His creative nonfiction has been published in Cimarron Review, Gulf Stream Magazine, Tampa Review, and in the book Living Blue in the Red States (2007), which he edited.  His plays have been produced in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, Minneapolis, Toronto, and elsewhere.

Could Have Been Great

There aren't a lot of creative writing texts that cover all four genres out there, and "Creative Writing: Four Genres in Brief" seemed a promising, inexpensive option to assign for my college creative writing class. The discussions of craft are solid and each section is followed by a checklist that my students found useful. Each chapter includes three opening examples that the craft lessons refer back to in order to illustrate their points, and I found this to be very clear and effective. My two main complaints have to do with the selection of plays and editorial problems with the book. There are only 7 plays in this book (by contrast, there are 26 poems, 14 stories, and 13 essays). I'm guessing the decision to include so few plays was made because the plays take up more pages than the entries in the other genres, but the result is a very limited (and somewhat lackluster) selection of dramatic works. A more annoying issue was the rather embarrassing extent of typographical errors in this book. There are small typos here and there, and at one point, a whole paragraph is repeated verbatim. The complete table of contents in the front matter is correct, but there is also an abbreviated table of contents inside the front cover, and this table of contents contains the incorrect page numbers! Besides being irksome, these typos make it hard to make the case to students that they should treat their writing with care and precision. Why do so when the very textbook they've paid almost $40 for appears not to have been proofread?! With a better/wider selection of plays and some good proofreading/copyediting, this could have been a fantastic book, so it's really too bad.

A Bit Better Than Adequate

I'm using this for a beginning level creative writing class. I like how quickly each section covers the basics, allowing students more writing time than reading time. I find, however, that I have to supplement with additional samples and information, particularly in the creative non-fiction section. The material on poetic forms is well done. Overall, it's relatively inexpensive, unlike many creative writing textbooks, clear, and helpful.

SUCH A PLEASURE... LOVE IT!!!!!!!

Yes, this was a good one. I love reading this exciting series, where loneliness goes away and happiness is found in the end. The author brought her main characters ( James & Clara in SECRETARY BOOK SERIES) to life. Emotions are all over the place, but written so well the two main characters are not lost. How nice not to make them needy and whiny. It was funny, sexy, romantic, and softness that fit this book for a wonderfully told story. Their romantic trysts was actually very open and clean. HOT!! I like it. Just read the first few pages and let the books flow. This series showed respect& care between the lines. Very adult .

Retirement brings with it much clutter, and it's easy for anyone who's accustomed to a daily schedule with all the "extra" business once taken care of by the employer (health, medical and dental bills, disability insurance, Social Security, annuity income), to feel dazed and confused, even perplexed and occasionally overwhelmed by all of the "secondary" concerns that require judicious choices not to mention poring through mountains of mailings, sorting out various plans, and being careful to note deadlines.

One of the more daunting programs, even before all the recent notoriety of ObamaCare, is Medicare. Not to worry. Patricia Barry's book explains the program in lucid, organized prose, separating the essentials from the less relevant information, and in a manner that enables the reader to make the choices that will ensure the best care at the most affordable price--including the distressful situations we may have witnessed in our parents without applying them to our own lives--until now.

Of most help to me was the explanation of Part D, which prepares anyone who has used, or possibly will be prescribed, expensive medications for, say, a cholesterol problem or an even more serious condition. Here's where the most choices are to be made. Is the cheapest plan necessarily the best bet? Is the most highly rated plan necessarily the one to select? And what about plans that offer two "slightly" different options at "substantially" different prices? How should you go about selecting between the two? And with respect to any of the plans, are they irrevocable or can the individual who is now eligible for Medicare change his or her mind and select a different plan? If so, when can the decision be made? How often? Can I change my mind a 2nd, 3rd, 4th time, possibly returning to the plan I started with?

Barry's book enabled me not only to distinguish between the forest and the trees but to toss several stacks of information that I had previously torn out of magazines and/or downloaded from the internet. For the present, it's the only book you'll need about Medicaare--at once reducing some of the clutter and setting your mind at rest about all of those saved articles you had "intended" to read (just be careful not to do the same with this book!)

As good a book you're going to get on the subject.

The Medicare program is fairly complex; not that this is a criticism of the government. Heck, I have a 750-page camera manual. Things are just more complicated these days. This book answers most of the questions you might have about Medicare, and quite a few you didn't realize you may have. It's particularly helpful in discussing 'Advantage' plans, which if you've checked them out, may not be such an advantage, if you know about philanthropic plans, for example, those offered by many hospitals,non-profits, medical association and even pharmaceutical programs that can help the 'gaps' in medical care coverage--however, only if you meet economic need requirements.

For example, (and I'm only going to give one): Medicare doesn't pay for opthamology exams unless you've been diagnosed as potentially having a serious eye disease. But there's a way to get regular free exams if you know where to look (in this case the internet can be your friend). What I do recommend is that this book provides a lot of information, but if you are seriously deciding on various options (like pharmacy plans, 'medicap' plans, etc.) you should definitely have a calculator with you as you read.

Finally, if you are considering becoming a health care advocate, there is a section on ideas that are afoot to alter Medicare, which anyone that relies on it should be aware of. Let's face it. A book like this isn't so stimulating it's going to be optioned for a Hollywood movie, but it's a book you should grow familiar with until it's almost second nature (like learning the times table). It will help you be informed ahead of the time when you really need to be informed in case you have a major health issue.

It stems from lectures that I began in 1970 at the Technical University of Graz, Austria, and continued at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada, 1980; at the Free University of Brussels, 1981; at Chalmers Technical University in G6teborg, Sweden; at the Academy of Sciences in lena, East Germany; at the "Haus der Technik" in Essen, West Germany, 1982; at the Academy of Science in Sofia, Bulgaria; and at the Technical University of Delft, Netherlands, 1986. The main goals of this book are, first, to bridge the gap that always exists between basic principles and applied engineering practice, second, to enhance the integration between biological and physical phenomena, and, third, to contribute to the internal development of the field of biotechnology by describing the process-oriented field of bioprocess technology.

Great Book!!

This book is great I bought this in addition to the required book for our maternal-newborn clinical rotation and it was a great addition. It provides information in a nice clear and concise format. There is not a lot of fluff and it is easy to read! I used this book more than the required textbook. It is more like reading someone's notes they took from a class or book. If you are looking for wordy descriptions and pages of the same information with one simple concept that could be summarized in a few sentences then this book is not for you. If you are looking to direct your studying and getting important information with minimal reading than this is the book for you! I was glad I purchased this extra book. Everyone else wanted to share and I loaned it out several times during the semester.

This book is just ok in my opinion. I like a text book with TEXT and lots of it. This book is to "listy"...it is just bullet after bullet of info. It's to the point I guess, but I prefer a classic textbook with more explanation.

About the Author
Stephen Finlan was the pastor at Mathewson Street United Methodist Church in Providence, Rhode Island, for three years. He is now with the United Church of Christ. Dr. Finlan is the author of Problems with Atonement (2005) and The Family Metaphor in Jesus' Teaching (2013), and the coeditor of Theosis: Deification in Christian Theology, Vol. 1 (2006).
