This is the VERY IMPORTANT message announcing the story of the birth of Jesus Christ!This pageant is designed for a production with no set, no budget, no live musical accompaniment, and where the cast reads from their scripts. If you have a set, budget, live accompaniment, and decide to memorize it all, you can still perform this pageant. Cast members (and production staff) should be dressed to approximate shepherds, Mary and Joseph, wise men, and angels with costumes and props. Only two full cast rehearsals are needed. The cast is arranged so that only one speaker appears in more than one act. The group can rehearse all three acts (not including the music) during the first rehearsal! This allows each child to spend time practicing, rather than waiting for a turn to say their lines. The second rehearsal is just a matter of going straight through the script with actors and musicians. This pageant can be staged with as few or as many sets, costumes, and props as you desire. It works equally well with no costumes or sets (read with scripts in hand), as it does with a full production of costumes, scenery, and every word memorized. Vocal/piano scores for the sung music selections of the pageant are included. The arrangements of the Christmas carols used during and between the acts afford you the option of having a choir, a soloist, or instrumentalists, or others to participate in the pageant.

Dennis has written for the ABC Radio Networks, the Episcopal Church Center, Theatre Three (Port Jefferson, New York), and DadsWorld.com He is active in the ministry programs of First Presbyterian Church of Northport, New York. Dennis has written three Christmas Pageants for Abingdon Press: The Surprising Christmas (2003), The Backward Christmas Pageant (2004), and The Very Important Christmas Pageant (2006).

Congregation enjoyed it.

The children at our church performed this pageant last week, and the congregation really enjoyed it. It is a humorous play in 3 acts: 1) Mary is told by the angel about the birth of Jesus, and she and Joseph are told in Bethlehem by the hotel clerk that their reservation at the inn has been cancelled; 2) some shepherds on the hillside are told of the birth of Jesus by some angels, and 3) the wise men visit Herod's palace on their way to visit the holy family. The script is written such that a child only has to attend the rehearsals for the 1 act in which their character appears. We did this on 2 three-hour rehearsals: one for staging, and one dress rehearsal with all the extra angels, lambies, etc. The kids mostly learned their lines at home before rehearsals started. The script includes a CD containing many things, most of which I didn't need, but it did have a recording of a "junk band" (which is required in Act 2), and a recording of a trumpet giving a herald call, used when the angel appears, and also when Herod is announced in his palace.
The script, as I said, is humorous. For example, Mary, when visited by the angel, thinks she is a solicitor and asks her to put them on her "do not call list". Our congregation laughed at all the right places and seemed to enjoy the humor. There are many practical suggestions in the text accompanying the script.

Best Christmas Pageant Ever!

We did this at the first church I served & it went over so very well that I had to get it for my next church. Adding a bit of humor to the traditional story is just what the people need sometimes. We even added pogo sticks to the kings the first time around. Maybe this time it will be a skateboard - you never know how the Holy Spirit will move you to be creative when using this pageant! If you're wondering which pageant you should buy - look no further. This one will not disappoint!

good but not perfect

I choose this pageant for our church because I liked the promise of brief rehersals. The format worked well, the children practiced in individual acts two times, one all act run through and one dress rehersal. NO PROBLEM with that limited amount of time MAINLY because we had tryouts for parts two weeks in advance and then required the children to come to the first practice with lines memorized. Some used printed scrips as props (as suggested in book) but 90% were able to memorize no problem. TWO drawbacks... hence the three stars and not higher. While the dialogue in the three acts was engaging and clever, the lengthy "narrator" portions were deadly dull. We completely scrapped them for our own work. ALso, the music was much more complicated than we could manage so we just cut most of it out. Overall, I would recommend this series... and HIGLY recommend you NOT overpractice, otherwise it defeats the purpose of the format!
