About the Author

John Foster is Director of the Museum of Moab in Moab, Utah. He served for thirteen years as Curator of Paleontology at the Museum of Western Colorado and adjunct faculty at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction. He has worked in Cambrian deposits in several areas of the western states, including California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Idaho, and South Dakota. He is author of Jurassic West: The Dinosaurs of the Morrison Formation and Their World (IUP, 2007).

Lots of fossils and a little bit of background

John Foster knows a lot about Cambrian fossils and wants to tell us about all of them, or as many as he can cram into this book. It's often simply too much. These trilobites were found here and those trilobites were found there. Each time with a short description, e.g. short spines, no facial sutures, etc.
It's not that I not interested in these fossils, otherwise I would not have bought a book titled 'Cambrian Ocean World'. And I definitely am interested in the predator Anomalocaris and, of course, the more recent very strange discoveries such as Banffia, Vetulicolia and Diania cactiformis (the walking cactus). These fascinate me. But I do wish Foster would explain more about the background. How the world was changing and why therefore were the animals. He does a bit of this right towards the end of the book but it requires a lot of stamina to get there.
There are a lot of pictures in this book, most of them small and in black and white. I didn't always find them very helpful. The color plates - very nice ones too - have all been put together in the middle of the book. So you have to keep flicking through the pages to follow any references. This compares poorly to the many, large color photographs and impressive artwork in the book "The Cambrian Explosion". That book is worth getting just for the pictures alone, even if it is aimed at an university undergraduates.
That said, 'Cambrian Ocean World' isn't easy on the reader either. It assumes familiarity with many technical terms such as glabella, pygidium or occipital ring, It's not all like that. Foster has visited many, perhaps all, of the places described and offers a vivid description of the scenery, sometimes including the odd anecdote.

I have mixed feelings about this book. A stronger focus on why things happen the way they do and fewer fossils lists would have been worth five stars.

Having read Gould's Wonderful Life years ago

Worth every penny of the cost! Having read Gould's Wonderful Life years ago, this was a reprise but much broader in scope and with newer findings/research. The mental image you develop of the Earth during those bygone eons is thrilling. Evolution is written big and wide, understandable and amazing. I will donate it to my local high school library. Hopefully some youngster will pick it up, be inspired and enlightened.

I recommend The Trilobite Book recently out too. The photographs of the fossils are spectacular!

Ever since reading Stephen J. Gould's "Wonderful Life" I have been fascinated by the lifeforms of the Cambrian "Explosion." The book is very detailed & scientific (not for kids). I skimmed the book to start with, & am now reading it in detail. Excellent.

Don't believe me? Google it and see for yourselves. That's how I found it and purchased a copy for my daughter. It's BRAND NEW, exactly the same book with exactly the same illustrations. The only way you should be paying these prices is if you can get a verified, signed copy. Otherwise these sellers are playing you for suckers. Do your research.

When reading this book, it seemed very symbolic and very much realistic. Wentz writes about a child that is invisible in the realm of many and it hits so close to home. Many children out there feel that way, and this book puts it in some very intriguing terms. I love the book and recommend it to everybody.

Finance for economists

This book provides the most elegant and coherent synthesis of finance theory, in a complete markets and frictionless settings.

For the reader interested in the theoretical foundations of modern financial models, this book has three main advantages over many of its competitors:

- It clearly shows the link between modern finance theory and the 40-year old Arrow-Debreu model. As this book will make clear, financial assets can be viewed as "bundles" of Arrow-Debreu contingent goods, and pricing kernels are simply extensions of Arrow-Debreu contingent state prices.

- It bridges the gap between arbitrage models on one hand, and models based on consumption, optimization/dynamic programming and general equilibrium on the other hand. Absence of arbitrage guarantees the existence of a stochastic discount factor, or pricing kernel. Optimality implies that the stochastic discount factor must be equal to the investors' intertemporal marginal rate of substitution.

- It provides a unified treatment of discrete-time and continuous-time models. Many finance textbooks focus on the mathematic tools and emphasize the difference between continuous-time and discrete-time tools--usually at the expense of the economics underlying both types of models. In contrast Duffie's book emphasizes the conceptual unity between continuous-time and discrete-time asset pricing.

This book was written more for students and academics than for pratictioners. It is not a reference or a recipe book for traders and programmers. Several chapters are devoted to general-equilibrium models that pratictioners are not likely to find useful. However, the essentials of derivative asset pricing and the term structure are also covered. The latest edition even includes a chapter on corporate finance.

Finally, this book is pretty much self-contained. All the graduate-level math results used in the proofs are presented either in the main body of the book, or in appendices.

Demanding but rewarding!

First of all, this book is for people with advanced mathematical preparation. Courses in functional analysis, measure theory, stochastic calculus and vector space optimization are in my opinion required for a deep understanding of the material in the book. Fortunately, the appendices are very good and provide many things that can help someone to follow the book.
In the first four chapters the writer develops the discrete-time theory,in order to provide a better understanding of the underlying ideas which remain the same in the next chapters which deal with the continuous-time setting.
Although the book needs a lot of effort from the reader, it is unique in that can help you see beyond the mathematics. In other words it USES the mathematics and it isn't just a layout of theorems and proofs.
Of course it can't be compared with books like Hull as it isn't accessible to everyone. But someone with the mathematical preparation , who has read Hull , should buy this book and he will never regret it.

painful and obscure

The mathematics of finance is not trivial, but neither is it really all that difficult; nevertheless, Duffie works to make you think that it is.

I maintain a scale of good versus bad mathematics writing in my head, against which I calibrate books I read. This scale stretches from, at one end, the faculty of Moscow University, in particular Israel Gelfand, Vladimir Arnold and Andre Kolmogorov, all of whom manage to explain to me hard things so that they seem easy, to, at the other, Darrell Duffie.

Engaging, approachable and ACCURATE

I ordered K.N. King's ``C Programming: A Modern Approach (Second Edition)'' from Amazon for my recent birthday. Having had more birthdays than I care to admit, this gift to myself is right up there with a Lionel train set I got for my eighth birthday (not from Amazon, of course -- it didn't exist that long ago but passengers trains sure did :)).

In this second edition, I think that KNK is now the logical heir to K&R. That's not meant as blasphemy -- Kernighan and Ritchie's still great volume is around 20 years of age and it's unlikely they'll be getting together for K&R3. The C language has undergone enough changes (with the amendment of 1994) and C99, that a ``Modern Approach'' really is needed.

There's another author familiar to readers of the comp.lang.c newsgroup for his approachable, engaging writing style. That author is a wonderful writer but doesn't let the truth get in the way of good narrative. King, though, is an equally engaging writer but is obviously passionate about correctness and adhering to the C standard. He's also meticulous about portability so that the examples are written in pure C and not some platform-specific variant.

I've the entire book and can find hardly anything even nitpick. Aside from a minor style difference about using parentheses with the ``sizeof'' operator, which King explains his rationale for doing so, that's about it.

His explanation of C99 (and the differences from C90 are clearly indicated) made me aware of some really nice features of the current standard for the language (and makes me wonder why one very notable compiler implementer hasn't yet supported C99).

In short, get this book. The Q&A sections at the end of each chapter are very well done. The exercises and programming projects help to amplify the material presented. And King's examples will teach you more about barcodes and ISBN numbers than you ever thought possible.

If you can appreciate the work of a fine craftsman in film such as Martin Scorsese, you'll find that King is of that caliber in the realm of lucidly dealing with this technical subject.

Probably the best (although I'm biased)

Some years back, someone mentioned the first edition of this book on Usenet as a possible alternative to K&R for someone trying to learn C. I was surprised, but I got a copy of the book to find out... And he was right.

Let me get the biases out on the table first: I did technical review of this book for the 2nd edition. But... While that leaves me in a great place to be biased about it, it also means that I'm aware of just how few typos or bugs were there even in the draft versions.

This book is an excellent teaching resource; it covers the language carefully, completely, and well. However, mere clarity of communication isn't enough to make a good programming reference; you also need to have confidence that the example code works as described, that the explanations given are correct, and so on. This is one of the only books out there I feel comfortable recommending to people, without worrying that I'll end up having to correct dozens of misconceptions later.

Quite simply, this is the C book I recommend to people who want to learn C, or polish up their C. In a market full of "approachable" books which are full of errors, this book offers a combination of clarity and accuracy which is unmatched.

With that book I learned the C language in a step-step notation as it is written to make the user follow it that why...
The Q&A section is also very helping and efficient for understanding the language.
I use this book now as a reference book for the C language.

Despite of the high cost, this book is very recommended because once you've learn C in an appropriate way, you will never have to buy any other book in order to learn it and to become more professional in it, as that book is makes it all for you for a once.

A much-needed current edition, the poet's work being reframed in the light of the most recent scholarship,including queer theory. Rather than treating Crashaw as an embarrassing anomaly (Catholic, perverse, "alien," etc.) Rambuss emphasizes what he shares with 17th century contemporaries like Donne and Herbert, as well as the high esteem in which he was held in the Anglo-catholic community. Nonetheless, Rambuss wryly appreciates the "weirdness" of which Crashaw was capable as a poet. It is hight time Crashaw received his due again from lovers of English poetry, and this edition makes it possible.

About the Author
John Leslie Mackie (1917-1981) was a philosopher who made significant contributions to the fields of ethics, metaphysics, and the philosophy of religion. A professor of philosophy at the universities of Sydney, Otago, New Zealand, and York, he was elected a fellow of the University of Oxford in 1967 and to the British Academy in 1974.

A Classic of Contemporary Moral Philosophy

The first chapter of Mackie's Ethics: Inventing Right and Wrong is the locus classicus for error theories in contemporary meta-ethics. There he argues that ordinary moral discourse and thought involve an assumption that there are what he calls "objective values," and that this assumption is false. Consequently, ordinary moral thought and language are infected by an error that precludes any ordinary moral claims and thoughts from being true.
Mackie first argues for a cognitivist interpretation of moral language. In other words, he argues that ordinary moral claims purport to describe facts about the world. In particular, ordinary moral language and thought purport to describe facts about objective moral values. What are objective moral values? They have two defining characteristics: (i) mind-independent existence (think of how chairs, trees, people, and electrons exist), and (ii) "intrinsic and categorical prescriptivity": that is, they are such that the mere apprehension of them will motivate a person to act in a certain way. The former characteristic is the source of their objectivity; the latter is the source of their normativity.
But, he claims, we have good reason to think that no such things exist. Mackie's fundamental worry about these putative objective values is that these things are especially "queer," that they are unlike any other things we have good reason to think exist. As I understand Mackie, underlying his worries about the queerness of these putative entities is his perception of a tension in their nature. He appears to believe that the objectivity of these putative entities is in tension with their intrinsic and categorical action-guidingness. That is, it is unclear to Mackie how something that exists as a mind-independent part of reality could have the sort of influence on human behavior that these objective values are supposed to have. It is unclear how something could be both objective and normative. The things that scientists study and that we encounter in the everyday world simply don't have this sort of categorical action-guidingness built into them. So, given the naturalistic conception of the world that Mackie favors, we have good a posteriori reasons to doubt the existence of objective moral values.
But, if Mackie is correct about the nature of ordinary moral thought and language, this commits us to regarding ordinary moral thought and language as involving a very fundamental sort of error, an error of presupposing that objective moral values exist. Mackie then completes his error theory by providing an explanation of our tendency to make this error, to mistakenly suppose that ordinary moral thought and language involve our successfully coming to know about the sorts of things he claims don't exist.
Mackie's book doesn't end here, however. Indeed, this is only the first chapter, and Mackie goes on to cover a wide range of territory in normative ethics and meta-ethics, along with a few issues in metaphysics (the existence of God and freedom of the will) that have some bearing on moral issues. In fact, despite his worries about the objectivity of morality, Mackie goes on to defend a substitute for morality, one that looks quite a bit like a broadly consequentialist moral theory, and he even weighs in on several controversial moral issues that are still with us. In short, in a little over two hundred pages of exceptionally clear prose, Mackie covers just about everything of interest in moral philosophy.
This book is, of course, essential reading for anyone interested in meta-ethics. Understanding some of the material and its importance may require some background knowledge, but enough of the book is more generally accessible that it also constitutes a good wide-ranging introduction to issues in both meta-ethics and normative ethics for a person with some background in philosophy (and perhaps for the general reader). Furthermore, the book, while not a work of history, is sufficiently informed about the history of the issues it discusses to provide the reader with an entry into study of the history of the subject.
If you're especially interested in Mackie's meta-ethical views, you should attempt to track down a copy of Morality and Objectivity (Ted Honderich, ed.), as it includes interesting and important reactions to Mackie's views by some major names (John McDowell, Simon Blackburn, R. M. Hare, Bernard Williams, et al.) in moral philosophy.

A Classic of 20th Century Ethics Indeed...

It might be read as an introduction to Ethics, but it isn't one. It is rather one of the most important works in 20th century ethics.

Mackie's book was revolutionary since being the first one to combine anti-realism (no objectively prescriptive values in the world) with cognitivism (the meaning of ethical statements can be true or false). Most of the previous anti-realists were anti-realists mostly implicitly, only because of being non-cognitivsts. Mackie has a different view which in my opinion is much more closer to the truth. The book also contains his error theory (people have a disposition to see their value judgments as objective). While the reviewer cdtreyer as the mainstream tradition have concentrated on Mackie's error theory I think it is much less important than the denial of the objective values and the justification of the role of morality in quasi-contractual terms.

Mackie's views on positive morality are justified by quasi-contractual (he discusses Plato's Protagoras, Hobbes and Hume) means and would combine very well with evolutionary perspectives. The discussion on the content of normative views is just a brief sketch, but this isn't really what this book is about anyway. Anyone who claims that the contents of the first part of the book undermine the contents of the second should read chapter 5 again and again and again. That there are no objective values in the world does not mean that there can't be right or wrong - it simply must be (or rather already has largely been) invented and constructed.

If you are interested in ethics you simply need to read this small, but important book which, while not being an introduction is still quite simple and very elegantly written. Besides the main content you will also get to read a great discussion on the meaning of the good (in debate with the classical Geach-Hare discussion found in Philippa Foot's "Theories of Ethics"), discussion on the is-ought problem and its flawed Searlean solution (also found in Foots collection), a chapter on univerzalisability of moral judgments (contra Hare) and on the frontiers of ethics: voluntary actions, determinism, law, politics, religion.

Father of Error Theory

This book is the father of all error theory books. He originates some of the central critiques of moral thought and discourse that guys like Richard Garner rely on (see also: Beyond Morality). They think there is something bizarre about morality's commitment to categorical reasons (things that you ought or ought not to do regardless of what your desires happen to be). They think moral properties are queer because he says that don't fit into a naturalistic worldview and because they are thought to supervene on non-moral properties (i.e. the moral properties "fix" the moral facts... so the non-moral fact of kicking a puppy is always accompanied by the property of wrongness).

As you may notice, the theory presented in this book does not agree with me. Error theory argues that morality is systemically erroneous... what do we do with moral thought and discourse then? If Mackie thinks supervenient relationships are flawed, exactly how do ordinary natural facts determine the moral facts? He argues for conservationism (rather than eliminativism) because he recognizes the instrinsic vlue of morality, although I don't see that working. I agree more with the ideas of David Boonin, David Enoch, and Michael Huemer.
