About the Author

Mignon F. Ballard grew up in a small town in Georgia and graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in journalism. Glory to the newborn King! Peace on earth and mercy mild...

It's the Christmas season in Stone's Throw, South Carolina, but peace on earth is not on the nativity program this year. Fear and anxiety have taken over the town once again after the death of a stranger out at the long-abandoned ancestral home of Lucy Nan Pilgrim. Lucy, along with her friends, is puzzled by the man's seemingly accidental fall from the empty house's balcony and soon becomes frightened when his death is tied to a mysterious locket, old ghost stories and family secrets that extend far beyond their town's little borders. Will there be broken hearts and broken lives under this year's Christmas tree or can the Thursdays (who really meet on Mondays) solve the mystery before one of their own is hurt? Alone, they may not have a chance, but with the heavenly help of Lucy's guardian angel, Augusta Goodnight, they just might!

Mignon Ballard brings Southern coziness and warmth to the table once again in this installment of her charming Augusta Goodnight series. With its sassy humor and yummy-sounding recipes, this book was a delight! Settling Augusta with Lucy in Stone's Throw has allowed Ballard to develop a cast of characters whose personalities are now well-established, allowing the reader to feel a deeper connection to the series that wasn't present in the earlier books. The ongoing plots threaded throughout the past few books - including Lucy's romance with quirky Ben - are also a nice addition, providing additional depth to the book. Though this means that Augusta takes a secondary role in the book, I've always felt that this was a better place for her than in the forefront. All in all, a nice cozy read.

charming amateur sleuth urban fantasy

Everyone's favorite Guardian Angel Augusta Goodnight is still staying with Lucy Nan Pilgrim in the small town of Stone's Throw, South Carolina. It is the Christmas season; Augusta's favorite time of the year. She, Lucy and their friend Ellis seek the right tree for their church fellowship. They are looking on the grounds of Willowbrook, owned by Lucy's cousin, when they find a dead man on the porch below the mansion's balcony; the guard rail is broken.

While everyone tries to identify the John Doe, they are also happy for their friend Idonia who avoided love for years, but is involved with newcomer Melrose DuBois, who gave her a locket as a sign of his affection. When Lucy Nan and Ellis visit the caretakers of Willowbrook, the Tanseys, they see a picture of the couple's dead daughter wearing the same locket that Melrose gave to Idonia. The dead man is identified as Dexter Clark, the son in law of the Tansy's' dead daughter. Dexter's Aunt Opal Henshawe is also killed; Lucy Nan and Ellis know the events are obviously related even Melrose's disappearance. However, what that connection is remains mysteriously unknown as they seek to identify a killer without becoming the next victims.

Living up to her surname Augusta is the personification of goodness as she is able to make those in her circle feel better about themselves. While she cannot directly help find the culprit, Augusta assists Lucy, Nan, and Ellis on the quest. They each have an inner strength so when they team up, they can move mountains. Mignon F. Ballard is a wonderful storyteller who enchants her audience with this charming amateur sleuth urban fantasy.

Very good but could benefit from an update

"Marx for Beginners" by Rius is an entertaining introduction to the life and philosophy of Karl Marx. Deftly using the graphic novel format to make the subject matter accessible to a general audience, Rius wittily and intelligently demonstrates how Marx can help us gain a better understanding of the world we live in today.

If you are new to the 'Beginners' series, you are in for a treat. Rius playfully uses a number of nicknames for Marx including 'Charlie', 'Charles', 'Herr Marx' and so on. The illustrations frequently make use of side characters who pose the sort of humble questions that the average person might think about asking the autor, if s/he could. The intent is to personalize the subject matter and make us feel a bit less intimidated by the prospect of analyzing one of the most influenctial philosophers of the past 150 years. In my view, Rius succeeds brilliantly on this level, producing a very enjoyable, informative and interesting read.

On the subject matter itself, Rius spends a good amount of time writing about Marx the man, whose poverty and suffering was a symptom of his uncompromising commitment to the cause of human emancipation. Rius examines at length the development of Western philosophy from the ancient Greeks to Marx, with emphasis on the divide between materialism and spiritualism (although oddly, Rius omits Epicurus, who was the subject of Marx's PhD dissertation, from the discussion). Finally, Rius briefly discusses Marx's major works including Capital (Das Kapital), The Holy Family and of course, The Communist Manifesto- and in the case of the latter, Rius includes actual snippets of text taken from the book in order for us to ponder Marx from his own hand.

Regrettably, if ever one of the books in the excellent 'Beginners' series could benefit from updating, it is most certainly this one. Written in the mid 1970s, Rius does not anticipate the end of really existing communism in the USSR nor the rise of post-Marxism as inspiration to the anti- globalization and Occupy Wall Street movements that have risen up against neoliberalism. Yes, Marx is very much alive and well today but this particular 'Beginners' book remains stuck many decades in the past. This is too bad because on the one hand, a great deal has been learned about how much mischief is possible when good ideas are appropriated for all the wrong reasons; while on the other hand, Marx's thoughts about social and economic justice could not be more relevant and timely to us today.

On that point, an update might well include Charles Darwin's profound influence on Marx, who is another great intellectual who is absent from Rius' work. In fairness to Rius however, the Darwin/Marx connection and the implications for the environmental movement has been a more recent discovery popularized by the excellent work of John Bellamy Foster (see Marx's Ecology: Materialism and Nature) among others. With environmental issues such as climate change posing ever great challenges, a 'green' Marx who is able to connect capitalism with the explotation of nature has never been more important.

Still, for anyone looking for a brief introduction to (most of) the Western thinkers and philosophers who influenced Marx; a look into the private life of Marx; as well as an overview of Marx's central ideas; then this book is a great place to start. I highly recommend it to everyone.

Useful little booklet on Marx

I bought "Marx for Beginners", a cartoon introduction to Marx written by Mexican political cartoonist Eduardo del Rio ("Rius"), not so much because I needed an introduction to Marxism but to see how the theory can be summarized as pithily and shortly as possible. And indeed, Del Rio has done an admirable job on this. The reader is guided through all aspects of Marx' work as well as biography, even including an extraordinarily rapid overview of the history of philosophy and of the early socialists. Of the economic theories of Marx only the basics are explained, but nevertheless sufficient to get the point of what Marx tried to show in "Capital", if not how he proved it.

As far as the political side goes, Del Rio usefully emphasizes the limitations of social-democracy and its inability to get beyond the exploitation of capitalism, as well as many quotations from Marx showing how he opposed this tendency. As criticisms, one could remark that Engels gets short shrift in this book - admittedly it is titled "Marx for beginners", but one wonders why not "Marx & Engels for beginners"? Also, Del Rio seems to take the connection between Marx and Lenin as a natural progression for granted, even including in the (otherwise very handy) vocabulary of terms under Marxism-Leninism: "theory of the proletarian liberation movement". Hardly something uncontested.

The drawings are clear and funny, if a bit on the juvenile side compared to the content that he is trying to convey. This might have a good effect on younger people reading it though, making it possibly useful as a high school text on Marx, if there ever is a capitalist country brave enough to allow it. Due to the requirements of Del Rio's purpose, some of the summaries of earlier thinkers are so simple as to be simplistic, but this can't be helped. Overall, a practical and well-done introduction to Marx for the complete novice.

About the Author
Ben Haggarty is a performance storyteller and a pioneer of the European storytelling revival. For over thirty years he has been performing folktales, fairytales, epics and myths to audiences of adults and of children, in venues ranging from caves to the Carnegie Hall. A walking library of more than three hundred and fifty stories his repertoire includes East European wonder tales, Irish epics, and modern myths such as Frankenstein and the folklore of Der Sandmann. He was narrative consultant for Jim Henson's Storyteller series and was the official storyteller with Yo Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble for ten years. He is Honorary Professor of Storytelling at the Arts University of Berlin, as well artistic director of the legendary Crick Crack Club. Ben has written two other children's comic strip series, Will Skoggyn's Skull and Silk Roads.

Adam Brockbank drew comics throughout his childhood and early teens, drawing inspiration from not only the black and white reprints of Silver Age Marvel comics, but also the French new wave, particularly Metal Hurlant. Comics were abandoned in his late teens in favour of painting, and he studied as a fine artist at the Royal College of Art in London. These two paths would come together in a career in the film industry as a concept artist and storyboard artist, with Adam working on many films, including Sleepy Hollow, X-Men and Captain America: The First Avenger. But it is for his work on all eight of the Harry Potter films that he is best known, designing the creatures, props and vistas that have brought to life the world of Hogwarts on screen.

Stone Age Tales

It only took a glance at this interesting and excellent cover art, along with it being about early mankind, that sold me.
Mezolith is a fast and fun read about a small tribe that lived 10,000 years ago in a forest on the eastern shore of Stone age Britain. There are very cool and poignant tales told here in this beautiful and lavish hardcover book.
Highly recommended. Can't wait for more!

So much has been achieved and discussed in the materials and design domain in the last decade; some of which has found its place in design practice and design education, whilst soem has yet to come to the fore and remains at a level of noteworthy points to be considered for the future of our societies and material possessions. This book presents a panorama of completed works and on-going discussions that are shaping, or are predicted to shape, our materiality, the selection of materials for products, and our understanding and appreciation of product materials. Presently we are witnessing the birth of a new body of knowledge termed 'materials experience', which systematically explores not only how people react to the varied physical material properties of things, but also to the diverse expertise that designers must possess if they are to positively influence people's material reactions.

About the Author
Dr. Karana is currently assistant professor in the department of Design Engineering at Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands and holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Design Engineering. She has presented her research at a number of international conferences and has run various workshops on the ‘meanings of materials’. Dr. Karana is one of the founders of the Natural Fibre Composites (NFC) Design Platform in The Netherlands. Her current research and education interests include teaching materials in design and designing and manufacturing with bio-based materials. She is the developer and the coordinator of the Materials Library: Made Of.. at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft.

Dr. Pedgley is associate professor of industrial design at Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. He teaches courses in materials and design and is actively involved in three areas of research: materials and manufacturing for industrial design, designing interactions between people and things, and methods of conducting academic research through designing artefacts. he holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Design from Loughborough University, UK.

Dr. Rognoli teaches courses in product development and materials for design within the department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano in Italy. Her current research interests include materials and design, expressivity and sensorality in materials for design, emotional design, design and neurosciences, and biomimicry.

All the way from Daybreak to Evening

While most of his genius went into the world of Middle-Earth and its fantastical history, JRR Tolkien produced a number of smaller stories during his life.

And though he disliked allegory, the enchanting "Smith of Wootton Major" is a bit of an oddity among his writings -- a beautifully fantastical little fable that drips over with Tolkien's love of real, deep fairy tales. And unlike many a story of elves or faeries since, Tolkien keeps that sense of mystery and magic in the world of the supernatural.

It takes place in a little town "not very long ago for those with long memories, not very far away fro those with long legs." The Master Cook of that village takes a vacation, and returns with an apprentice in tow. But something odd happens at the Feast of the Cake -- the cook stirs in a "fay-star" with little trinkets in the cake, and it's accidentally swallowed by a boy there.

The boy (later called Smith) is changed by the fay-star, which sparkles on his forehead. When he grows up, Smith ventures into Faery itself, and even meets the Faery Queen herself. The message she gives him is for her mysterious, missing husband, the King -- who turns out to be the last person anybody in Wootton Major would have expected.

"Smith" is a fairy tale in the best sense. Don't expect cackling witches or convenient loopholes in spells here; Tolkien was too skilled for that. Instead we have majestic fey and sparkling magic, woven with a tidy medieval town (consider the custom of naming people after their jobs -- Smith, a smith, capisce?). Never once does it become precious or cutesy, only more enchanted as it goes along.

It's also among Tolkien's simpler writings, especially since it is effectively a short story. In fact, it's so simple that it barely has a plot -- the vanishing King is the closest it has to conflict or a complete plot.

But Tolkien's writing sparkles with little details of the fey, with only a minimum of description. His glimpses of Faerieland are too brief, but written with the exquisite, haunting quality of his better-known works ("Once in these wanderings he was overtaken by a grey mist and strayed long at a loss, until the mist rolled away and he found that he was in a wide plain"). And he gives the impression of a world of magic far greater than any human could grasp ("... bearing the white ships that return from battles on the Dark Marches of which men know nothing").

And Smith is an odd sort of hero, infused with a kind of otherworldly light and grace that shines from him in the form of "Starbrow." Perhaps it was so stand in for the ability to see the magical and fantastical in the mundane world -- and if so, perhaps Tolkien felt that he himself had been given a fay-star that never left him.

Certainly the beauty and sweetness of "Smith of Wootton Major" suggest that he had one always -- an underrated little tale of magic and faerie, which highlights Tolkien's sublime writing.

Tolkien's portrait of the inexpressible wonder of grace.

Farmer Giles of Hamm is a hilarious tale in the spirit of the lighter passages of The Hobbit. The Little Kingdom of this story has much in common with the Shire where Bilbo Baggins wandered. It should be read for the shear pleasure of the journey.
Smith Of Wooten Major is something else entirely. Though once again we travel to an ancient England that has much in common with Middle Earth, here we find a tale for grown ups. Though most reviewers say that the tale is about what the gift of fantasy adds to the life of those who receive it, I believe that it really speaks of the rewards that come to those who choose to live life on a deeper level. What makes the book difficult to describe is that in story form Tolkien paints a picture or an illustration of the faith and the grace that were such an integral part of who he was as a person. Travelling with him you feel that you have encountered something more deep and wonderful than words can tell. The journey is not for everyone, but for those of you who take it and begin to glimps its meaning, like Smith's magic star, it will become an integral part of who you are.

A Revelation of Tolkien's Visions of Faery

J.R.R. Tolkien's short work, "Smith of Wooten Major," which he wrote late in life, has already appeared in several fine editions, both by itself and in combination with other pieces by Tolkien, and most of us Tolkien enthusiasts already have it on our shelves. So why another one now, and why should we buy it? There are several compelling things about this book that make it highly attractive to those seeking a deeper understanding of Tolkien as a writer and thinker, and I'll only mention four here. First, this extended edition includes an important never-before-published essay by Tolkien on the story and on Tolkien's views of the nature of Faery, of its importance to him, of faery tales, and of the role of allegory in stories of this kind. It is a fascinating piece that provides new insight into Tolkien's thought as an artist trying to capture glimpses of Faery in his writing. The essay is in some ways an echoing companion piece for his famous earlier essay "On Fairy Stories," in which, among other things, Tolkien outlines his theory of sub-creation that he executed so successfully in "The Lord of the Rings." Second, the book contains never-before-published early notes and draft manuscripts for Smith, several pages of which are reproduced in the book itself in their original hand-written form with helpful transcriptions on the opposite page. These papers not only show Tolkien actively creating and revising his story and the history of its characters, but they also show Tolkien's working methods as a writer and so demonstrate, in a microcosm, the methods he used on such a large scale for "The Lord of the Rings." Third, Flieger's editorial contributions are very helpful. She provides an afterword that discusses the critical treatement of Smith, its genesis as a story, and outlines the new material which, as she says, allow the reader to follow "the authorial progression from explanation to inspiration to formulation to painstaking revision." Flieger's notes are also very helpful, for she points us to relevant matters in Tolkien's other works and illuminates puzzling aspects of Smith. And fourth, this is perhaps the first edition of Smith that takes Tolkien's statements that it is not a children's story seriously. He called Smith "an old man's book, already weighted with the presage of bereavement." Previous editions of Smith have ignored this statement and dressed the tale up as a children's book, presumably based on the unquestioned assumption (which Tolkien questioned very sharply in "On Fairy Stories") that because this is a faery tale, and because it is short, it must be for children. This edition honors Tolkien's view not only of Smith but of the importance of Faery and faery stories in general by beautifully reproducing the tale and the lovely Pauline Baynes illustrations, which were made for the first edition, and by setting them within a handsome hardcover text that Tolkien readers will prize very highly. This is a must have.

About the Author
David Burch, the director of the Starpath School of Navigation in Seattle, Washington, has been teaching navigation and seamanship since 1977. He has logged more than 60,000 sea miles, including three wins in the trans-Pacific Victoria to Maui yacht race. He is the author of nine books on marine navigation, including Emergency Navigation (International Marine, 1984), and his magazine articles have appeared in "Cruising World, Ocean Navigator, Sailing", and "Sea Kayaker". He holds a U.S. Coast Guard Master's license (100 tons). He is also a past Fulbright Scholar and holds a PhD in physics.

Great for practice, not so much for theory

This book presents a very thorough and descriptive discussion of the practice of taking, reducing, and plotting celestial sights so that you can fix your location on the sea (with other topics as well). It is a very practical course and for that I recommend it. You WILL be able to navigate by the heavens when you are done (with some sextant practice). However, it is a bit light on theory and for some people, like me, if they don't understand at least the basics of the theory, then it's hard for them to connect with the practical applications. If you are the kind of person that has to know "why" something works before you can remember "how" to do it, then you need more than this book. I actually did read the neat little primer, Celestial Navigation for Yachtsmen by Mary Blewitt before getting this course. Actually I read it twice because it's small, but the concepts are dense. It was an excellent preparation for this much more practical book on how to really use celestial navigation on a real ocean passage. If I hadn't read this first, I think I might have struggled with David Burch's book. Yet, if I had tried to actually practice celestial navigation armed only with Blewitt's book, I don't think I could have really done it either - it just doesn't provide enough detailed guidance. Burch's book anticipates all those little questions that a student would naturally have when he gets ready to actually take a sight and find a line of position. So, Burch's book is excellent, but get some kind of background in the geometic and mathematical theory first. Note: Starpath has on-line classes as well, and that may be where theory is explained, but the full program is much more expensive and this book is the foundation of the course, anyway.

My recomemndation to anyone learning celestial navigation for sailing, as I was, is to just get Blewitt's book and Burch's book, and then when you are done working through Burch's book, then go out and by the rest of the stuff, i.e. sextant, nautical almanac, sight reduction tables, etc. You will know exactly what you need to buy after working through his book. You do not need a sextant and any tables to complete this book - all information you need to learn how to use all the various tools of celestial navigation are contained in this book and its exhibits (with exception of standard plotting tools such as dividers, parallel rule, protractor, typical stuff you probably already have from coastal navigation. If not, the book tells you what you need in this area as well). Oh, and when you order the book, get some "universal plotting sheets" as well because you need them to practice plotting the results of the sample navigational exercises and the book does not provide these.

This is an outstanding practical guide to celestial navigation. Burch is a very good instructor. He has decided to focus on the "how" rather than the "why", even though as a physicist he could easily do the latter. This means you learn the exact steps to all the major activities of celestial navigation. The author provides clear examples and problems with detailed answers. He does touch on the key ideas of theory but in my opinion he is more interested in making sure the student can actually solve typical navigational problems of the type found underway. Finally a lengthy, in depth chapter is provided with many detailed points of practise that together are not found in any other text that I have seen. I strongly recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn celestial navigation

The best of my 5 Cel Nav books. Started as a complete novice. Now I can cel nav without calculator or GPS.

All five are good, but only one really walks you through the actual steps, with examples, of cel nav. I wish I saw this book first. The beginning has just the right amount of theory, and then he jumps into the sextant, spending time on the vernier, actual old-school plotting, and then specific examples, ie., noon sighting, sun sighting, moon, and stars. Then there is a thick section of detailed "extra study" material, more or less like an appendix, filled with tips and tricks of all sorts. Finally, there is a glossary, examples, problems, answers, and copies of the forms he suggests you use from his firm. He even covers topics like "short dip" sightings, to use on a lake or land, when you are practicing and can't get out to blue water. This is critical for all us beginners....

I am sure that if you go through this book carefully, work the problems, and so on, and then set up your cel nav station, you will be able to do a pretty good job of cel nav from start to finish without so much as a pocket calculator or GPS: just his material, an Almanac or equivalent, a good watch, and a pencil, paper and some plotting tools.

I started with the e-book although another reviewer complained about the reproduction of the figures and the difficulty jumping around in the book while working the problems. Like the other reviewer of the ebook, I bought the actual book, and continue to study from the ebook when the regular book is not convenient.

If you only have $30 to spend on Cel Nav literature, skip the rest, although they are all good, and go straight to Burch. The ebook is a good add-on, but not easy to work in, secondary to inherent problems with ebooks. Burch has managed to put a whole bunch more into one easy book than anyone else has.

I "guarantee" you won't be disappointed.......

Helpful, practical and modern advice

As a bride-to-be wading through the dozens of issues that come with planning a wedding, Marcy Blum's WEDDING PLANNING FOR DUMMIES has already proven very helpful! Though I have several other books geared toward orchestrating the big day, I appreciated that Blum blended etiquette and history with her tips.

Broken down into easy-to-digest chapters with subheadings about issues as diverse as deciding whether to change your name, what to include in welcome bags for guests and how to (tactfully) let guests know that children aren't invited to receptions, WEDDING PLANNING proved especially helpful in guiding me toward the appropriate wording for wedding invitations.

The guide is a quick read that can be picked up at various points in the wedding-planning process -- so whether you're newly-engaged or already locked into a time, date and place, I think there are nuggets of help for everyone. The guide provides tips for same-sex weddings and celebrations across different faiths, too. I'd already sent save-the-dates and made major decisions when I received the book, but I still found plenty of good advice -- especially on how and why to register for gifts. Blum doesn't get carried away with etiquette or "this is how it SHOULD be done," but she does do a great job of explaining what the "traditional" methods are and contrasts them with more modern approaches. Basically: something for everyone.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the process of planning your big day, WEDDING PLANNING FOR DUMMIES could be a valuable resource for organizing your thoughts and creating an event that is meaningful for you and your beloved. It felt very inclusive and thoughtful, and I dog-eared many pages to return to as we get closer to our wedding.

My (future) mother-in-law gave me this book, and boy am I glad she did! Anyone involved in planning a wedding can benefit from this book. It addresses true-to-life issues that everyone deals with during the planning process. This book calmed me down, and helped me feel more secure about the decisions I was making!

I'm not a wedding person, per se. In fact some of them I've attended are what nightmares are made of. I can think of one in particular that had people dissing it for ages. This was wrong, that was wrong, so-and-so was offended, etc. The last wedding I went to was so awe-inspiring and memorable that I wouldn't mind going to it again. Undoubtedly, the reason it was such an overwhelming success was because of the planning that went into it. No, it wasn't the result of a wedding planner, but one planned by members of both families. They simply did their homework.

Let's face it, aside from watching numerous episodes of "Say Yes to the Dress," I know nothing about planning weddings. I can tell the difference between a ball gown and a mermaid, but formulating an invitation or scheduling the actual wedding day I am and would be clueless if I didn't study up. I will be the mother of the groom and, provided the lovely couple doesn't elope, I'll be planning it with his future mother-in-law. I definitely selected this book with a purpose in mind. Rather than hysterically flounder when the next "big event" comes up, I'll be prepared.

Yes, there are a few of those cartoons we all appreciate, but fortunately most of the visuals are useful ones. For example, there is a step-by-step one of how one ties the "Four-in-Hand Knot" (it's not something he can do.) There are numerous informative sidebars, tips, tables, and cautionary notes to take a look at. The titles of certain sections are understandably cutesy ("Happy trains to you"), but the information is cogent and quite well-organized. In the back of the book is a very expansive index, something I certainly appreciate.

Planning a wedding does take a lot of effort and simply browsing this book gave me an excellent idea why that one wedding was a disaster. On the other hand, it also told me just why the other one was such a resounding success. Planning, planning, planning. As far as I see it, this book gives people options. When you read this book you can make your wedding tailor-made to fit your budget and whatever style you desire. If you find one area you want to focus on, you can always head to the Internet and expand upon it. There are several recommended websites to explore. In a nutshell, if you are in the throes of planning a wedding or want to plan one in the future this is *the* book to take a look at, especially if you are a wedding dummy like me. Take the effort and you might have one of those memorable weddings instead of a disastrous one ... believe me, we've all seen them and they aren't pretty.
