No question this is Louisa May Alcott

These are dispatches home from Jo -- no doubt about who could have written these.

They are interesting in the sense of a young person's first impressions of illness, injury, death, and war. Not to mention, life in the south through the eyes of a Bostoner. Very few letters -- she didn't last long before a fever got her -- but very interesting. The gentlemanly behavior described, the ladylike behavior -- all of it in Jo's style of writing. Great!

Civil War Hospital Sketches

This book was short and gave some insight, but was a little disappointing since I had just finished reading Civil War Nurse: The Diary and Letters of Hannah Ropes. Both Louisa May Alcott and Hannah Ropes were assigned to the same hospital. Hannah Ropes' book is more in depth with the day-to-day details and her feelings than Hospital Sketches. Louisa May Alcott's book makes you think it was written specifically for a certain reading audience in mind and was found lacking in some respects.

The dialogue between characters was not very good. Instead of seeming like a conversation with an ...

This book had a fairly interesting story line but there were a few things that bothered me. The dialogue between characters was not very good. Instead of seeming like a conversation with an exchange of ideas, it was more like one character lecturing to the other. I suppose this was a way to impart background information to the reader but it seemed very stilted and unrealistic. Another thing that bothered me, how did they finance all this travel that they did? At least two of the characters were unemployed but money never seemed a concern. It was sort of annoying how each of the characters in turn would come up with a solution to a problem at the most opportune time. All in all, this book is worth reading if you don't have anything else on hand to read. I am not sure, but some of the awkwardness of the writing may be due to translation..

This book had me from the first chapter, I enjoyed the historical detail and descriptive detail. While it is a bit of a stretch to believe that the group of three heroes in this tale both survived their adventures and followed clues apparently missed by others the journery they took us on was entertaining.

As long as you have a fertile imagination and accept, as the author advises, that this is an adventure then this is GREAT.
If you are one who often picks holes in story lines then leave this alone.
This is fast paced and fun knitted around some interesting historical facts that are relevant today.
I enjoyed it.

Red River

Wesley Stone is next in line to be the Alpha of his pack. Well, he should be whenever his uncle finally decides to step down from the role. But Wesley is different. He is a scar on his abdomen that many in his pack see as a weakness, though he doesn't quite understand why. He's always been a bit of an outsider, but he's completely shocked when his uncle lets him know he'll never be able to lead their pack. If he wants to become an Alpha, he'll need to trade places with an Alpha from a nearby pack and take the current Alpha's son as his mate. While it's not anything close to the ideal situation, Wesley agrees, thinking he will find a way to make the best of it. But when he meets Jobe Root, his intended mate, everything turns out to be far different than he expected. The way the Red River pack functions is not at all like the pack in which Wesley has lived his life. He quickly learns that many of the things he thought were absolute might be a bit more fluid than he believed. It turns out there are some things that Wesley didn't know about himself, either...

This is a quick and engaging read. The pace is just right to keep the reader interested without ever feeling too rushed. And the slow reveal of some of the information about Jobe and the Red River pack certainly allows for a few twists to be thrown in along the way.

This is the second book in a series, but it appears to be stand-alone. I've not read the first book, and I had no problems at all following what was happening here or knowing who all of the characters were. One thing that did throw me, and I'll share it even though it might be a bit of a spoiler, is some MPreg near the end. I'm not one for MPreg stories--it's something I've never been able to suspend disbelief enough to not catch me up in a story, even in those with paranormal themes--but it's so close to the end and isn't really a major focus of the story, so I found myself able to look past it in my reading.

Pssst... this is fantasy, not science fiction

First off, I think Cardeno C. is a decent writer so talent wise that's so not at issue for me. I enjoyed the last book Blue Mountain and I was hoping the writing would just get better as the writer got more comfortable with the world being built. Unfortunately writing the omega/mpreg deal can run you into some messy cringe worthy issues and CC seems to want to fall face first into every last one of them. So let's take on these problems and I will explain my score.

1) This is fantasy, not science fiction... you do not have to justify or rationalize or explain why these guys turn into wolves to begin with because we all know why. It's A FREAKING FANTASY about werewolves and magic we got it. So, you are not having to rationalize werewolves and you are not rationalizing why "alphas" are "alphas" and you are not explaining why "omegas" are "omegas" so why are you all stuck on trying to rationalize mpreg? Why? No really, why?

2) The whole baby making belly pack with the always convenient see through hatch you are seriously describing is SO LAME! Why not just include a zipper while jumping off the deep end of WTF? And yeah PSI (whatever that means) is "so rare" that two different people in the same pack suddenly have the same rare condition. Because rare *reasons*... why not explain that?

3) Last but not least we come to the main couple Wesley & Jobe. Jobe came across as backstabbing with his "lies of omission" deal not to mention the underhanded cut throat political manuvering Wesley was up to at the beginning of their "romance" and it never really lightens up Jobe just gets more and more annoying playing emotional Yoda to Wesley's helpless derp at least that was the vibe I got. It just left me not caring at all about them as a couple with all the rather heavy handed unromantic issues with the mate stuff and all the unromantic issues with the hokey mpreg stuff and then all the unromantic issues with the other pack and it's various dramas. Wesley started coming across as shallow uninformed and pretty much too stupid to live and not someone I cared about in the least. As a reader I came away feeling like CC was more involved in setting up the next book and increasingly less involved in selling the romance in this book.

To leave this on a constructive positive note go read Finding His Omega by Wolf Specter or Omega Adored by Aiden Bates as more recent examples of omega/mpreg stories that avoided these obvious pot holes and as an added bonus did not suck in my opinion.

the “mate” situation makes Wes feel like a whore

Red River is the second book in the Pack series, the first being Blue Mountain. This book can be read as a standalone.

There are so many ways I could spoil this story with a review. Many of the revelations need to be experienced by the reader as the book progresses. My suggestion is to read this before diving in too deep with reviews that contain spoilers, just in case. This is a SPOILER FREE review.

Wesley is an Alpha wolf shifter that doesn’t have the support of his pack. The current Alpha suggests an Alpha trade with another pack to which Wes reluctantly agrees. Wesley will travel to River River and become a Co-Alpha with the current Alpha-in-waiting, Jobe Root, after they bond as mates. Unfortunately, the “mate” situation makes Wes feel like a whore, but that is just the first of many misconceptions on Wes’ part.

Jobe Root, next in line for the Red River Alpha title, is a complete and total hippy. He communes with nature, eats only food provided by the land and specializes in herbs and spices from his garden. There is actually a scene when Wes firsts meets Jobe where Wes smalls the air to make sure easy-going-laid-back Jobe isn’t smoking weed. Hilarious!

Wes and Jobe, once they got on the same page, had an adorable, hot relationship. I thoroughly loved these men, both good, hardworking, caring people. They had a HUGE number of misunderstands that greatly affected their relationship. It was actually a little too much and got out-of-hand, which is why I am giving this 4 stars instead of 5.

I can recommend this sweet, touching, but often frustrating, shifter romance to all MM romance fans who like their shifter-wolves big and buff and hot as hell!

Full of information

This series of books, to me, is still the 'gold standard" for Bible commentaries. One can skim or go as deeply into facts and theories about the Scriptures as one chooses. The only thing that could be better is to have the series as originally written rather than the edited and re-written one such as this.

first and only volume of an aborted series

"Volume 1" implies at least a Volume 2 (and for as diverse a subject as neotropical birds, with Volume 1 covering only through gulls and terns in the taxonomic sequence prevailing in 1977, quite probably Volumes 3, 4 & 5). This work is the sole fulfillment of an abortive (and quite ambitious) project. The value of this present work is not diminished by the absence of subsequent volumes in the series.

The author characterizes it as a "faunal synopsis written primarily for the taxonomist, vertebrate zoologist, ecologist, and zoogeographer". Indeed , the treatments of families and genera and the species accounts are essentially technical in nature, but birders confronting identification puzzles may well find helpful (and in many instances diagnostically conclusive) information regarding physical characteristics (including structure and plumage), distribution and habitat preferences.

Bottom line: copies in good condition of this work are often offered at Amazon and elsewhere (as of 2014) for as little as $6 USD (plus about $4 shipping). Fun & Helpful Guide to Train Your Dog!

This book covers the basics such as sit, stay, and come which are important to master first before starting any "trick" commands. It gives an easy to follow description of how to teach each trick. It also shows pictures of both the dog and the trainer to show what the command should look like, which is helpful as it shows exactly what each step should look like. The book goes on to teach a lot of "fun" tricks as well such as speak, fetch, and games like soccer and hide and seek. As helpful as this book is, I would still recommend getting help from a professional if you are working with your first dog! However, once the groundwork is done, this is a super fun way to build a great relationship with you pup!

Quantity of "tricks" diminishes quality of instructions

Don't like - too many steps are missing! The leap from taking a basic step toward the end trick is fairly significant in some cases. I also purchased a book on scent-oriented games, which detailed some of the same activities (ie find the keys) in much greater detail -- and, in my mind, more effectively.

I think this book might be a starting point if you have a highly motivated and intelligent dog (poodle, lab, etc.), but the tricks explained are not great for me and my hound.

This book starts off with the basics - sit, lay down, etc. It offers helpful tips on how to convince your dog to actually want to obey commands, and how to coax them into certain positions....such as getting your dog to sit, and then slowly sliding the treat away from the dog on the floor. The nose follows the treat, and your dog ends up lying down without having to be pushed or forced into the position.
This book works its way from the aforementioned basics through more advanced an specialized tricks. The tricks at the very end of the book are mostly only useful for show dogs, but I would recommend this book to anyone who's looking for basic commands.
Keep in mind that this book is about tricks, and will not help with behavior. Training a dog to sit on command will not make them stop chewing on your shoes. A well trained dog is not the same as a well behaved dog!

Great reference!

Every year I buy this book great for referencing times surgeries, physical therapy, times to travel...planting flowers, garden best times for crops. Great reference. Very disappointed it was not for sale for almost two months....but great to have now.

WILL NEVER BE WITHOUT IT!!!!

I"ve been buying this annual for many years now........I use the 'best dates' for my dental cleanings, eye exams, and chiropractic treatments....also use it 'slow hair growth" dates.....and every year I give family & friends the best dates to cut their lawns for slow growth.....they razz me about it, but if I don't get it to them early in the season they ask where it is!!! lol...........

Also have a friend with a small bakery business.....there's even a 'best baking dates' list!!!!!! she was skeptical but tried it and was amazed at the results.

so yes, this stuff DOES WORK...............I could never be without it.

I will add, on a sad note, that Ms. Palmer's health is not the best right now.......I spoke to her on the phone a few months ago and she will be turning the almanac over to someone else soon........she also said she's had problems finding a typist to do the work, as it's so involved.....

anyway, GET THIS ALMANAC NOW AN EVERY YEAR.... you'll be amazed at what it can do for you.

I cannot recommend it highly enough!!!!!!!!
