The above words are a partial excerpt from Julius Erving’s preface. These heartfelt and ego-free sentiments… will provide the reader with a notice that you’re about to read a sports autobiography that comes from a much different shelf… than the overflowing one filled with mindless… me… me… mantra… of countless athletes.

As the story begins in childhood… the reader at first will think that the writing has an “infantile” feel to it… then as it continues… you’ll slowly start to realize… that the telling of the story is as if you’re actually inside young “June” (Julius’s nickname with family members… short for Junior)… and you’re actually looking through his eyes… you even feel as if you’re his size… as he continues to jump… and jump.. and jump… trying to be able to look out the window in his home. The love between all members of the Erving family is both touching and nostalgic. The lessons that come along with the love from “The Doctor’s” Mother… reminds you of the way America used to be… and at least the way you wish it to be now. Along with an older sister… there’s a Father not in his daily life… and who dies young… there is also younger brother Marky… who is sickly… and idolizes Julius… and not only lives through his older brother’s accomplishments… but deluges June with questions on all subjects. Julius is Marky’s protector… and he loves him so deeply… that his short life of illness… is one of the tragedies that will never leave The Doctor’s soul for all eternity.

Order… Order… Order…

You’ll come to appreciate that Erving loves order in his life… everywhere! His pencils need to be in order… his clothes need to be in order… he loves sports because there is an order to it. Order… Order… Order! Regarding basketball… “What I have is powerful and easily observed love for the game.”

He is always jumping… rising up… jumping… rising up! His coaches become Father figures… whether in “sal” ball (Salvation Army)… high school… or college. Despite his playground machismo and artistry… he also likes the plays… the signals from the coach… the order. Growing up in the tumultuous sixties… The Doctor… refuses to hate… despite bigotry… despite continuous pressure from those around him. His evolving into a playground legend… is once again written as if you’re viewing it through his very eyes. The basketball accomplishments that probably every reader is aware of is definitely covered in this book… but it becomes secondary… to the man… the person… the gentleman… the American… the class act… that even during shortcomings… and moments of weakness… Julius Erving one way or another eventually paints with class. He doesn’t blame other people… he not only stands up… he rises… he rises… up!

The writing… really seems more than mere writing… in this book. I don’t know if a scholar would call it first person… second person… narrative… I just don’t know. What I do know… it’s like poetry… with its own flowing rhythm… and a view from the reader’s eyes… into Erving’s heart… and out through his eyes… for a panoramic absorption of The Doctor’s lifetime experiences… and emotions.

I am the same age as Julius… I was born in the same part of the country as Julius… basketball was as big a part of my life as his… and the individual basketball exploits shared… I was definitely looking forward to when I bought this book… I am especially pleased … that younger readers will get an education regarding one very important historical fact. Basketball didn’t start and end with Michael Jordan… before Jordan there was The Doctor… and before The Doctor… there was Elgin Baylor… and I’m ever so glad… that Julius makes it perfectly clear… that it was Elgin Baylor that inspired him to pattern his play after… jumping… jumping… rising up!

But… in the end… the power… and dignity… of this book… is not the basketball… it’s the man… Julius Erving!

Probably the best sports autobiography I have ever read, and I have read a lot of them. It's a page turner and really emotional. It gave me a lot of insights into the man, the times, and especially, the game. I bought 5 of 'em to give to the ballers I play with. Just great.

DR J WAS poetry in the air and truly one of a kind. He is one of the Greatest Basketball Players and also a very down to earth Brother. no matter what the term you use, be it Swag, Cool, Cold, Smooth Dr J was that cat who had it like that. now this Book Covers his Career and what happen off the court, various Ups and downs and what shaped up his life then and now. he left a mark on and off the court. He was a Black SuperStar in an Era where there weren't a whole lot as you have now. he broke alot of Ground. Doc was so Badd He made the NBA come to him and Bring him there. Michael Jordan, Dominique Wilkens, Vince Carter, Kobe Bryant, Dwayne wade, Lebron James amongest others owe a debt to the Greatness and Ground Breaking Player that Dr J Julius Erving was.

The book is international in scope and an entertaining walk through history. People representing all types of occupations are covered, from U.S. presidents to Greek philosophers to entertainers and sports figures. Brief biographical information is given about each person, and sources are given wherever possible. The anecdotes range in spirit from the very moving to the amusing and ridiculous, with the emphasis on the latter two. Typical is the entry under Hank Aaron: "During the 1957 World Series, Yankee catcher Yogi Berra noticed that Aaron grasped the bat the wrong way. 'Turn it around,' he said, 'so you can see the trademark.' But Hank kept his eye on the pitcher's mound: 'Didn't come up here to read. Came up here to hit.' " The arrangement is alphabetical by person, with name and subject indexes. The introduction includes an excellent essay on the definition, history and purpose of anecdotes. Anecdotes are brief stories we like to tell about people, more succinct than gossip and more respectable. Most in this dictionary have been "pilfered" (vii) from other collections, but on the other hand there are an informative introduction, an index of themes, and a bibliography of sources. The anecdotes themselves are arranged under the name of the person they're about. That this is a reference book, however, is doubtful: many of the anecdotes are followed by a cautionary note that they have been told of others as well or are apocryphal, and it's unlikely that much seriously useful biographical information is revealed in them, no matter how entertaining or true. Priceless Anecdotes

This excellent book of anecdotes is a necessary addition to any teacher's library...Or anyone's bookshelf who does any speaking at all. A good anecdote
tells you more about a person than a whole volume of factual material...And this book if full of interesting, often humorous stories. I love this book. Thanks, Amazon!

Worth Reading

This is a pretty interesting book. I have both the paperback and the Kindle version. The only fault I find with the paperback is the use of French phrases in some of the anecdotes with, in a number of cases, no translation to English. As for the Kindle version, the editing is atrocious, but a reader who is actually fluent in the English language should have no trouble deciphering what is meant.

I own four copies of this book: A nice hardback for the shelf, a softcover to leave in the guest room, a rather shop-worn softcover to lend, and an ebook for my kindle. I read lots of other things, of course, but I always come back to this lovely, delightful book. I envy you if you are discovering this for the first time.

This book contends that the gap between cultural/diversity centers and institutional retention efforts is both a missed opportunity and one that perpetuates the opportunity gap between students of color and low-income students and their peers.

Identity-consciousness, the central framework of this book, differs from an identity-centric approach where the identity itself is the focus of the intervention. For example, a Latino men’s program can be developed as an identity-centered initiative if the outcomes of the program are all tied to a deeper or more complex understanding of one’s Latino-ness and/or masculinity. Alternately, this same program can be an identity-conscious student success program if it is designed from the ground up with the students’ racial and gender identities in mind, but the intended outcomes are tied to student success, such as term-to-term credit completion, yearly persistence, engagement in high-impact practices, or timely graduation.

Following the introductory chapter focused on framing how we understand risk and success in the academy, the remaining chapters present programmatic interventions that have been tested and found effective for students of color, working class college students, and first-generation students. Each chapter opens with a student story to frame the problem, outlines the key research that informs the program, and offers sufficient descriptive information for staff or faculty considering implementing a similar identity-conscious intervention on their campus. The chapters conclude with a discussion of assessment, and suggested “Action Items” as starting points.

About the Author
Vijay Pendakur Dr. Vijay Pendakur serves as an Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at California State University – Fullerton. Prior to joining Cal State Fullerton, Dr. Pendakur served as the Director for the Office of Multicultural Student Success, a department charged with increasing the retention and persistence of low-income students, first generation students, and students of color at DePaul University in Chicago. He holds a bachelor's degree in history and East Asian studies from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, a master's degree in U.S. history from the University of California, San Diego, and a doctorate in education from DePaul University.

Shaun R. Harper is on the faculty in the Graduate School of Education, Africana Studies, and Gender Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also serves as director of the Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education. He is cofounder of the Penn GSE Black Male Grad Prep Academy, an initiative that prepares undergraduate men for doctoral study in education fields.

Professor Harper maintains an active research agenda that examines race and gender in higher education, Black male college access and achievement, and college student engagement. He is author of over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles and other academic publications. His 10 books include: Student Engagement in Higher Education (2009, 2014), College Men and Masculinities (2010), and the 5th edition of Student Services: A Handbook for the Profession (2011).

He is co-editor of the Stylus Engaged Research and Practice for Social Justice in Education series; editor-in-chief of the Routledge book series on Race and Racism in U.S. Higher Education; and associate editor of Educational Researcher, a journal of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

Dr. Harper is principal investigator of the New York City Black and Latino Male High School Achievement Study, a project that entailed individual interviews with 415 young men of color from 40 public high schools. Several associations have praised his scholarship, including the Association for the Study of Higher Education (2008 Early Career Award), AERA (2010 Early Career Award), and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (2012 Robert H. Shaffer Award for Faculty Excellence).

About the Author

Charles A. Brau received his B.A. in Engineering from Cornell University and his M.A. (in Engineering) and Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Harvard University. In the course of his career, he has been a theorist, an experimenter, a manager, and currently a professor of physics at the Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He focuses his research on free-electron lasers (FEL) and electron beams. He became a program manager of the FEL program at Los Alamos National Laboratory and then a director of the FEL Center at Vanderbilt University. In 1988 he was a visiting scientist in the Department of Nuclear Physics at the University of Oxford in England. He is an author of 7 patents and numerous publications, including 2 books. He is also a fellow of American Physical Society.

Disappointing...

The moment the professor in our class told us that instead of Jackson we'd be using another book I couldn't hide my joyous feelings. I ordered Brau's book (the recommended for our e&m course) and waited...

After living 3 months with this book all I have to say is how disappointed I feel. I thought it would be a really modern e&m book. In some aspects it is. The material it covers is pretty interesting. But the book has so many mistakes that get very frustrating. Keep in mind that at the back cover an errata webpage is referred (with several pages of corrections!). Trust me, you'll need it. Also, most of the problems are exactly the opposite of Jackson's - too easy, although I must say that I like the approach "Using A prove that B holds" - by knowing the result you can feel more confident when solving a problem.

In short, I read the book only when I HAD TO - meaning when we were assigned problems from it. I was oscillating between this and Jackson... Now I wish we had used the second all the way through...

Modern treatment of classical electrodynamics

In most textbooks, including Jackson's, Maxwell's equations are derived empirically
through Coulomb's law, the law of Biot and Savart, Faraday's law, and Maxwell's
inclusion of displacement current. This approach has been presented again to most of
physics graduate students; However, using this approach to graduate student will diminish much of the excitement and enthusiasm and ignore the entirely new way to look at from the relativistic point of view where electric and magnetic fields are really different aspects of same physical quantity.

Brau's arrangement of the text, was influenced by that of Landau and Lifshitz, developed much easier version with a theoretically more elegant
approach: a treatment of the electromagnetic fields which emphasizes its relativistic appects from the beginning.

Also, Charles A. Brau gathers valuable information from such classic texts as Max Born and Emil Wolf's Principles of Optics, Joseph W. Goodman's Introduction to Fourier Optics, and L. D. Landau and E. M. Lifshitz's The Classical Theory of Fields, Jackson's classical book, and packages it all into one very readable volume.

Not just for Gourmets

Don't be put off by the dour photo on the cover. MFK Fisher has a lively wit and a breezy style of writing that is a joy to read. In this book she takes on topics based on the alphabet. In dining Alone, she describes the difficulty of being a food writer. She is never invited to her friend's because they think their cooking isn't good enough, so instead she goes home to a lonely supper of canned soup and crackers. The chapter on Bachelors describes a meal that on the surface is dreadfull but is made delightful due to the care and effort of the gentleman to provide hospitality to his guest. Every chapter is full of charm and the recipes are quite good. A very enjoyable book.

Particularly enjoyable for her rather obscure selection of an alphabet by which to write about food. If you want more, I recommend the compendium The Art of Eating, by the same author. This woman really enjoyed food, even the simplest meal, which might even be eaten alone and enjoyed more for the experience.

If you want in-depth info about the Balinese....

Though this book was originally published over a decade ago, it remains the best source in English for learning about the Balinese through their rituals, daily life, and cosmology. It is not casual reading, but it is also not academic, because Eiseman has such love and interest in the Balinese themselves, not just Bali as a 'paradise for tourists.'

As one reviewer said, "he has produced the most detailed descriptions yet of most aspects of Balinese life and culture. He lives down in Jimbaran on the south coast, so many of his descriptions relate particularly to that area - practices change a bit in different places. He understands the Balinese language, which is not the case with many academics, who visit Bali briefly and write learned treatises, and don't always get it right."

The Sekala and Niskala are ways of saying 'the seen and the unseen," the outward appearances of things and all the symbolic, or mystical, or ritual meanings of all the things he describes. The book is not a tourist guide to places--it's a guide to what makes Bali the fascinating place it is beyond the beaches, massages, and spas. I didn't read it until after I'd come to Bali; but a friend read it before coming and said it really helped him understand some of the things he saw. So either can work--I carry it around on my Kindle and refer to it often.

I would recommend this book to people who find the Bali life around them fascinating and want to know the 'why' of so many aspects of it. From ceremonies to masks to why garbage is placed in a certain part of the house compound, he provides the answers. Because the book is essays you can go to any chapter and not feel like you should have started at the beginning.

Wonderful Book

During a recent visit to Bali, I became fascinated with the practice of Hinduism there and how it influences every aspect of daily life. I recorded my guide's explanations as we went along, but I wanted to learn much more. This book, based on first hand experience, has provided all I was looking for and more. If you are interested in world religions and Balinese culture in particular, I can't say enough good things about this book. Unfortunately, the author passed away in 2013. I would have loved to correspond with him.

Cool manga

The artwork for the manga is great and you won't be disappointed.
The story is really good despite it deviating from the English anime and video game. This story is based off of a video game that was only released in Japan.

The book's worth the price.:)

Plus there's 4-5 pages of full color artwork at the front!
