About the Author

Anne Berest is the author of two novels and a biography of Françoise Sagan published this year; she also writes for television, cinema, and theater.

Audrey Diwan became a scriptwriter after studying journalism and political science. She wrote the screenplay for Cédric Jimenez’s La French, with Jean Dujardin, and is now directing her first feature film; she is also editor-at-large for the magazine Stylist.

Caroline de Maigret studied literature at the Sorbonne before moving to New York to model. She returned to Paris in 2006 to found her music label. De Maigret has been an ambassador for Chanel since 2012, and supports women worldwide through the NGO Care.

Sophie Mas was born and raised in Paris. After graduating from Sciences Po and HEC, she started her own film company and now works as a producer in Los Angeles, New York and São Paulo.

Here's a breakdown of each chapter, and oh--it should be re-titled "How to UNDERSTAND a Parisian". A collection of list-icles

I live in NYC where there's a lovesick affair with all things French -- I mean, there are buildings here named "The Left Bank". Walking thru the West Village? you hear just as many French convos as you do English. Every editor espouses "Get that French It-Girl look!". Heck, Isabel Marant is a worshipped idol with an altar on Broome Street. So when this book came my way, I just had to take a closer look. In short, it won't *teach* you how to be Parisian, but it will help you *understand* the Parisian.

You can flip to any page and start reading, 'cause it's a mishmosh of :
40% bullet-point "list-icles" of Parisian aphorisms, do's + don'ts
30% filler photography by one of the authors
20% inner monologues that show Parisienne's thought processes on life
10% filler artwork (gotta fill up more space!)

The tone is informative, yet intentionally self-deprecating, 'cause, like, "let's not turn off the American audience with our snobbisms and superiority complex! After all, we need to sell books!" This makes the book engaging and easy to read at first.

Chapter 1: The Basics
-Aphorisms: "make it look easy", "always be f*ckable", "be own your knight in shining armor"
-Fashion No-No's: "wearing too much makeup", "sweatpants", "Ugg boots"
-Mannerisms, Faux Pas, Famous Parisiennes
In essence, the Parisienne doesn't want to look primped 'n polished. She's naturally confident, having grown up with an excellent French education that has cultivated her in philosophy, arts, literature, and good taste. This is key--- she has so much substance that she knows she's worth it. No need to prove it with designer logos or bling. She's selfish in a good way, which can read as snobbish to Americans.

Chapter 2: Collection of Disjointed Listicles
-Being Aloof: "talk softly so that people have to lean in to hear you", "Always look as if gazing into the sunset."
-Dinner Party Talk: "if possible, get the conversation flowing with a controversial political statement"
-Driving: "whenever she gets pulled over, the Parisienne begins to cry"
-Recipe for Lemon Chicken and Pot Au Feu
This chapter is just as cuckoo as the Parisienne. To sum it up, she's full of contradictions. She's a feminist but watches porn. She'll smoke on her way to the countryside to get fresh air. She acts aloof but has anxieties.

Chapter 3: More Fashion + Culture Stuff
-Lists of "essential" wardrobe items which you've seen in magazines/blogs 100x before (ballet flats, white shirt, scarf, trench...)
-More random diary-like musings on books (Proust is a given), savoring the moment, poetic odes to sitting at cafes, aging gracefully

Chapter 4: Love
Few of these bullet points will work if you're seducing an American man. They're just not used to the cold, aloofness "game" unless one is extraordinarily pretty. This is not an instructional manual-- it's more to help you understand the liberal French attitude towards love and sex; where sexual jokes are totally normal in office environment, where having a lover on the side is natural. You just have to grow up in the culture to "get it."

Chapter 5: Filler Lists of Stuff
-Recipes for crepes, baked apples, eggplant caviar + more
-Parlor games to play at a dinner party
-List of French words used in English + vice versa ("trompe l'oeil")
-The authors' favorite Paris haunts, films, quotes

Ok, some redeeming moments -- the games are actually fun, and the recipes authentic. But the list of Paris hotspots will ultimately be out of date, and the inner monologues are repetitive and tired. There is a 2-page spread of a Paris photo for you to "cut out" and put in your pocket. Hmm... TRYING to fill up the book, eh? As i reach the end, it seems desperate to provide substance through lists. Well, i can get these bullet points from the 'Net without the overtly dreamy filler paragraphs.

i'm familiar enough with the French culture that this book is a throwaway for me. I wish the book was more like Chapter 4, which is the most sociological and interesting. The inner monologues throughout also help in understanding this enigmatic creature. But the rest of this "book" of lists is easily found on various blogs and articles on French style.

If you're new to Parisian culture, and don't want to scour Google for all the various info, then this book can be a good "101".
You won't become Parisian after reading this book. But you can *definitely* understand her a little more after reading it.

I'm not the right audience

My interest in the french culture and being Parisian stems from my interest in Coco Chanel, the woman. Her life story fascinates me and I'm always looking for anything written about her and her life. I also really enjoy books written by Mireille Guiliano and by Americans living in Paris trying to raise children in French society. So it's no surprise that this book piqued my interest when I saw it referenced by someone I follow on Instagram. I downloaded it to my kindle and finished it in a weekend. It's a quick, easy read. I can't say I didn't like the book, it just wasn't for me: a 45 year old, professional, married, mother of two, happy living the typical American suburban life. Other than the recipes, and a few fashion and style tips not much else can be gleaned from the book and applied to my life. But, if you are young, single and trying to be a Parisian Carrie Bradshaw - this book is for you!

The love bits particularly make me gag

I don't get so many positive reviews for this one. I thought it would be a guilty pleasure type of read but it paints women as a strange combination of vapid and calculating. It is list after list and not much else. I purchased the audio version to listen in the car and I cannot get through it. The love bits particularly make me gag. Very 1950's kind of garbage with acting like you're busy when he calls and sending yourself flowers to make him jealous. Gross!

About the Author
Charles Hornsby has been a writer, analyst and occasional contributor to Kenya's politics for more than 25 years. He has combined a professional career in IT with a multinational company (which has allowed him the opportunity to live in Ghana, Kenya, The Netherlands and Malaysia) with a deep engagement with Kenya, its politics and and prosects. He completed his doctorate on Kenya at St. Antony's College Oxford in the 1980s and was the co-author in 1997 of the influential Multi-Party Politics in Kenya with David Throup. He has been a journalist, international observer and domestic observer in various Kenyan elections.

He is married to Gifty and they have two children, Edith and Peter.

The book introduces you to some geopolitical atmosphere as it existed in the colonial days of Kenya denoting the ruthlesness of the people in power positions. I want to note that there are not much writings concerning the peasantry however much ado with the leadership of the electees. It sometimes addresses the finance climate of Kenya.As i read the book,I compared the situation against that of other African countries about which I have read and thus concluded that Kenya may demonstrate a more advanced community. By and large ,the book is quite entertaining and offers a reality approach to this African country which has developed as a rather valiant colony of England. It gave me quite a complete picture of the nature of a dedicated African people surmounting the pains peculiar to the formation of a new society in a milieu of traditional values.

Isaac Asivov is incredible!

Actually, I have not read this book yet but have read 4 previous volumes on his work on the Middle Ages. I will soon tackle his last 4 in this series on the US (which includes this one). Asimov definitely was a genius and writes in a way that makes it easy to understand. I just wish he was around to write more. He is well know for sci-fi, but I love his non-fiction. He's the best!!!

Dr, Asimov's histories tell the stories of previous eras so that even I can understand. His versions are much more clear but complete than traditional school-taught versions. He ties everything together.

a really great summary of the events that created the colonies and states and their peculiarities that still exist today. And history of names of places is very interesting. I read this after finding and reading and loving the second volume in an English book store years ago. This one is a keeper too!

I think it’s a good look at the beginning and growth of the equestrian ...

I found this book very engaging. I think it’s a good look at the beginning and growth of the equestrian world in Iran before the revolution. Royalty makes an appearance and the military structure plays a strong part in the running of the imperial stables. While Gail Rose Thompson was engaged as trainer for the stables of the Imperial Court she had an entree into what life was like for the upper and privileged class at work and at play. She experienced the frustrations of a woman entering a male dominated profession and society. When given the chance to ride into the mountains she found beauty in the natural landscape of the country. Gail Rose Thompson showed me a picture of Iran so very different from what I have seen in the news coverage of the last years. It was a good read.

The author - a Canadian woman working for the Shah - brought Iran's equestrian efforts to the international level. And she saw some of the internal world of Iran - socially, politically and geographically - in the 1970's under the Shah.

Inviting Disaster, by technology and history writer James R. Chiles, is an unusual book: it appeals to the macabre desires that keep us riveted to highway accidents, while knowledgeably discoursing on the often preventable mistakes that caused them. At its heart are colorful stories behind more than 50 of the most infamous catastrophes that periodically chilled the advance of the industrial age. There are both those well remembered (the 1986 Challenger explosion, for example) and those now largely forgotten (a 1937 gas explosion at a Texas school that killed 298). But along with lively depictions of these deadly devastations and white-knuckle calamities--the U.S. battleship Maine, Apollo 13, and Three Mile Island among them--Chiles offers an informed analysis of the unfortunate chain of events that brought them about. And by grouping like incidents to show how fatal "system fractures" eventually developed through a combination of human error and mechanical malfunction, he also suggests how we might sidestep such tragedies in the future. Despite the specter of the Titanic, the oil rig Ocean Ranger was called "unsinkable" until one fateful night in the North Atlantic in 1982. Failing to anticipate that the vessel could list significantly to one side, its builders left open some five-foot-long holes on top of its corner supports, which filled with water during a terrible storm and led to the deaths of all 84 crew members. Chiles treats readers to a laundry list of such disasters from Bhopal to Chernobyl that arose from mistakes, panic or hubris. The result is a parade of dramatic stories about people who are simply unable to think in critical situations: "imagine having to take the most difficult final exam of your life while somebody is lobbing tear-gas grenades at you... when you are also suffering a major migraine headache and violent food poisoning." In some cases, he suggests proactive measures (e.g., when on a plane, note the number the rows to the exit, in case there's a snafu involving blinding smoke). In a book that is much more than a litany of disaster and tips on survival, Chiles also offers fascinating, detailed analyses of "system fractures" chains of events yielding catastrophes. Despite the depressing subject matter, the book is ultimately hopeful, recounting numerous acts of foresight or bravery in the face of bureaucratic opposition that saved many lives. (Aug. 31)

Anyone who's been caught in a traffic jam caused by an accident can attest to what seems to be a universal fascination with disaster. While an engaging topic does not guarantee a good book, this volume on the conflicts between machines and humans is accessible and free of excessive technical jargon. This is not a Luddite's call for a return to the days before complicated technology but a careful examination of various disasters such as Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, the Space Shuttle, and an assortment of industrial and airline accidents and how they might have been prevented. While not all accidents can be avoided, Chiles shows how a large number of them could have been. Chiles contributes regularly to Smithsonian magazine, Audubon, and Air & Space, and the level and style of writing exhibited in these publications is maintained in this text. Interesting Stories, Important for Engineers but Hard to Distill Lessons From

This is an interesting book consisting of a large number of engineering disasters and near misses. Each is treated with a brief investigative story explaining what happened and generally why. Most of the disasters are very large, such as the Piper Alpha and Bhopal and thus are the most dramatic and hard hitting. The Concorde on the cover is not a prominently examined example however, which was slightly disappointing to me being an aerospace engineer.

For the lay reader this is an elucidating set of stories that many will find intriguing. For the practicing engineer it is more a reminder of the importance of safety, considering failure paths, incorporating safety systems, designing within the constraints of human capability squarely in mind, etc. However it really is a book from a pop-interest TV show. Although subtitled "Lessons from the Edge of Technology" the lessons are the simplest kind that would be discovered on a 1 hour TV episode with commercials, such as after the Piper-Alpha incident revealing: sea water and electronics don't mix. It's not a good theoretical or reference source for learning about safety in engineering design, but is a good motivator for learning why it is important for engineers and regulators to know and implement such things.

Examining the incipient causes of failure

Mr. Chiles writes in a manner so easily digested that the the book is a total pleasure to consume. He brings the reader into a dissection of events that is concurrently educational, fascinating and entertaining. Simply one of the best books on the market for understanding how the causes of failure often have seemingly unconnected incidents in their past which become the true incipient causes for the ultimate disaster.
I have used this book to train insurance engineers to look at risk from a different perspective; to more thoroughly seek out the incipient causes of failure; to encourage them to provide deeper examinations in their assessments of risk at operating entities (in an effort to prevent/avoid failures); and to overall improve their professional development.
This is a must read for professionals as well as for the casual reader's sheer enjoyment. If one could award 6 stars on a scale of 1 -5, this book truly merits it.

Great book, but illustrations lacking

Every engineer or scientist should put this title on their "must read" list. Chiles' interesting explanations and descriptions of accidents waiting to happen often sent chills up my spine. Readers can see trouble brewing. Too bad the participants didn't.
The book suffers, though, from poor illustrations. There's not a photo in the book that shows either the components involved in the various disasters or the aftermath of these disasters. The lack of photos makes the various events seem almost surreal. The simple 2-D line drawings don't convey much information. The figure showing the Three Mile Island reactor, for example, describes a condensate valve and relief valve, but the illustration doesn't point them out.
The book has a couple of minor technical errors. The author refers to Sevin and Temik as herbicides. Actually, they're insecticides. He also mentiones cleaning a gunky trimer out of a pipe. Unless you know what a trimer is--three molecules of the same substance--this unexplained term may leave you scratching your head.
Overall a very good book. I recommend it highly

good text but no exceptional

This is a good text with a lot of examples. However, the author doesn't seem to be vary famous or recognized in this field. Indeed, Mr. El-Sayed publications seem very limited. Moreover, there are several typos in the text and the author uses several Wikipedia references for the historical introduction. In my opinion, Wikipedia is unacceptable as reference for this kind of textbook even for non technical parts.

A lot of matter is covered by the author but some parts are very repetitive. Indeed, approximately half of the book deals with cycle analysis of the various aero-engine configurations.

This book is a well organized solid starting point for air breathing detail turbine engine design

A very helpful, well organized informative detail design reference book. Great for individual component detail design as well as total engine overview design. I earned my BSAE in Air Breathing Propulsion from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Daytona Beach, FL) using this book for my entire last year. This book is a solid starting point for air breathing detail turbine engine design. Its worth the price and the weight it adds to your bookshelf (or bag).

Excellent book for anyone who has ever had to convince someone to do something differently (i.e. everyone on this planet)

This book provides a great introduction into the modern world of advertising. Adam methodically runs through the various aspects of how ad campaigns are generated, and backs up approach with relevant references to psychological and economic studies. The book turned a lot of my preconceptions about this process on their head (admittedly most of my understanding of advertising comes from watching Mad Men). It was not an industry where I expected an evidence based approach to doing things.

The most interesting part of the book for me was about the "Benjamin Franklin Effect". Google this now - it's pretty awesome. Adam shows how the industry is using this to great effect to change peoples opinions about their brands, and then spur a change int heir behaviour.

Although I work in an IT consulting firm, a lot of my day to day activities revolve around the generation of business, and trying to get new customers to engage with us, or existing customers to engage with us more. This book has given me a good framework to get going, and enough references that I can start reading more about how to do this.

A well-researched and thought-provoking book that challenges how we think about advertising

The AIDA model proposed by E. St. Elmo Lewis (1989) has become the cornerstone of modern mass marketing. Until today, it continuously influences how adverting copy is written, how product is marketed, and how campaign is measured. This book challenges the scientific premise of the AIDA model and offers a fresh perspective on how advertising works that will turn your thinking upside down.

The co-author of the book, Adam Ferrier, is an Australian consumer psychologist and marketing communication strategist. After a successful career in the advertising industry including co-founding the Naked Communications, he uncovered a secret recipe to effective campaign: "Action changes attitudes faster than attitudes changes action." His insight is grounded in psychological principles and the latest understanding in behavioural economics.

This book is a fascinating read. I particularly enjoy the use of real world campaigns to illustrate how advertising can be a force for good. My favourite ones include Dumb Ways to Die and Ask Richard.

Solid Gold

I have a mobile tech startup serving marketing/advertising teams from agencies, brands, and retailers alike. No one on our team has a background in advertising or working at an agency so the conversations we have with clients can sometimes be challenging. This book has been an amazing discovery because it helps us get in the mind of the marketer/advertiser/agency so that we can much more effectively position how our solutions can help them - using terminology and arguments they understand. And, with all of the external references to the underlying research, it's a gold mine of material.

I started out with the Audible version and after getting through that about half way, I knew I had to to get a copy of the book as well. I only have one complaint - increase the font size and line spacing to make it easier to read. It might add another 50-100 pages to do so, but the content is well worth it. So many books take the opposite tact - giant font and lots of whitespace to make up for limited content. This book is the opposite!
