Another look at Nomadic Furniture

Back in the early seventies, when I first saw a copy of NOMADIC FURNITURE, I was fascinated by the variety of basic necessities one could make for oneself using inexpensive building products and a minimum of technique. With basic materials and mechanical skills, and the ideas, and seeds of ideas found within this book I took off on a long journey of experimenting with furniture design and construction. That journey, and this book are no less valid today.
Thirty years later, my eldest son is off to set up his own household, and I looked back into this book for ideas to share with him and I came to this website looking for a copy to buy him. Beds with eggcrate bases, swing arm lamps, crutch-tip/spring supported legs bearing bookshelves, creating your own private "living module" in rental properties, even some structural cardboard furniture - all were things I tried, inspired by this book. Many of those creations I lived with for years, and a few I still have.
As I began to get a feel for designing my own possessions, I came to appreciate more and more the Papanek/Hennessey philosophy that a simple solution could also be an elegant one, and it could also be resource responsible. I've spent most of my life designing and building things, and looking through this book again has helped me realize how much I owe the authors.
Readers who use this book, and it's difficult to imagine anyone looking at it who won't use at least some of it, will also profit from NOMADIC FURNITURE 2, published in 1974. It's more of the same, and in this case, more is good. Papanak also authored another book in 1973, Design for the Real World which establishes his philosophy of sustainable design, and for aiming design at all the world's peoples, not just the wealthy West. The NOMADIC books are simple, practical introductions to that philosophy. They contain ideas that could, at their basis, be used anywhere.
NOMADIC FURNITURE is a book for students and retirees (rich or poor), for newly established live-in relationships, for the cash-poor middle class, for the bored wealthy and for everyone of every life-style who finds importance in how they live, who understands that it is important to have some possessions, but not be possessed by them.

A great book whose time has returned?

I was inspired by this book as a young designer and built several of the projects; my favorite a work desk from a single piece of plywood. The book is a wonderful, though not exhaustive exploration of simple DIY furniture. It is intended to inspire your own pursuits. More than anything else, it evidences a sensibility to environmental and resource issues that is more relevant today than ever before. It is truly amazing what some people were saying and doing 35 or 40 years ago while nobody was listening. Is anyone listening now? Maybe. Papanek also wrote "Design for the Real World," again evidencing a sensibility as relevant today as it was novel when written. It is a brilliant time to reprint this book. Dwell magazine has captured an emergent modernist trend and taken it in the wrong direction, one of affluence (what architect Ian Ritchie would refer to as "Afluenza") and exclusivity. This book incidentally presents a certain style that a low-budget modernist can appreciate, a style yielding from the pragmatical pursuit of doing more with less. With the emerging economic reality, when compared to a 10k B+B sofa, a nicely thought out and simply crafted cardboard couch can take on a distinctive elegance. It is a mentality we are all likely to have to get to sooner or later, and we will be all the better for it. Perhaps this reissue can help guide the way for some of us.

Wonderful book, workable ideas.

I bought a copy of this book a long time back. I've made up several of the designs, including the no nails or screws workbench. I made the workbench up because I wanted a big desk cheap. That was over twenty years and four major moves ago - and I'm sitting at that workbench desk right now. I lost my copy ten years ago (never, ever lend books that you can't stand to lose!), and am delighted finally to be able to replace it.

Good strong introduction to understand how to use ROC curve to analyze medical tests.

Nice formal introduction to use ROC curve to evaluate medical tests diagnostics. It went through all the basic concepts such as sensitivity and specificity and the different measurements such as AUC and the binomal distribution to quantify the ROC curve. Unfortunatley, I was looking for one particular topic that the book did not cover - introduction of "reader" for the test diagnostics. It makes all the statistics very complicated as a result and an area which is not being covered well.

well written book on an important topic

With the increase in cancer trials both in medical research and the pharmaceutical industry, medical diagnostic tests including medical imaging evaluations are being used more and more. There is a need for adjudication when radiologists disagree on a diagnosis and some standard statistical measures from other fields are finding new application.

This book provides a thorough background on the subject, the methodology and the applications. It is very clearly written and not overly technical. The methodology is the classical frequentist approach to statistical inference. Recently, Lyle Broemeling has published a book on this topic that takes exclusively the Bayesian approach and explains the Bayesian approach for those who are not acquainted with it. When dealing with predictions based on evolving data the Bayesian approach might be more natural. This would be the case in a clinical trial where the data is reviewed sequentially.

A particularly important part of diagnostic accuracy analysis is the area under the ROC curve. Pepe does an excellent job of covering that topic. This text is referenced often in Broemeling's book since it provides an excellent explanation of the same topics using the frequentist approach that he covers with the Bayesian approach.

The book is excellent, its rendering into Kindle format atrocious

Pepe's text on the statistical evaluation of diagnostic tests is perhaps the most readable and approachable in the field. Being an avid user of my iPad with Kindle app, I bought the Kindle version of the book. I was extremely disappointed to find that not only did the Kindle rendition make the page numbering of the Contents and Index meaningless, but there is considerable coruption of mathematical notation, in particular sub- and superscripts.
As a result of my frustration with using the Kindle version, I have bought the paperback - which is as excellent as I expected it to be.
Until Amazon has improved the technology to the extent that a book such as this is faithfully rendered in Kindle, I think it is improper to offer the Kindle version for sale, and certainly when so high a price is asked!

Very worthwhile book on the topic

I have read many computing books and I can say this is an excellent introduction to the topic. Topics are presented clearly, with concepts building on each other in a logical manner. The author does not avoid the matrix algebra underpinnings of animation, which allows the reader who makes the effort to undertake even the most complex tasks. If you are undertaking a web design and expect to use CSS animation or transitions, I think you found your guide.

Exceptionally well written technical book

8 stars for the author, Steven Bradley, negative-7 stars for the publisher, Pearson Education, which includes the imprints Peachpit (this book) and Adobe Press. Informit.com handles web distribution of their ebooks if you don't buy it directly from Amazon (I recommend you purchase from Amazon if you need the Kindle format).

The content of the book is excellent. The topic is fairly small in scope, but it was precisely what I was looking for. I'm not and have never been a professional web designer, but I am responsible for 2 small static websites. They were both put up years ago, and have gotten pretty stale, so I wanted to freshen them up, but I need some inspiration. I also need to brush up my skills. I got both out of this book. Don't get me wrong, if you're just starting out, this isn't the book for you (yet -- but come back when you get that under your belt!). But if you have the basic skills, this book is perfect. I should also mention I was a programmer in a previous life, so code doesn't scare me and I already have the mind set to debug my own code.

Because of the small scope, he's able to dive in pretty thoroughly. He devotes a chapter each to transforms, transitions, and animations, how they work, and exercises to work through. Then having laid the groundwork, he provides a wonderful context for them by laying out Disney's rules of animation. Finally, a few chapters covering the more realistic needs that web designers actually face, such as sliding sidebars and so forth, perfect for the world of multiple devices and 'media-queries' that any web designer now faces.

What really pleased me about this book is that his writing style is not only very straight-forward, it's very readable. Too many technical books these days are written with too many boilerplate phrases thrown in. For example, instead of "open the file 'example 4_8'" you get "Go to your main menu and choose file > open. Then in the dialog that opens, in the textbox for file, type in 'example 2_8' (without the quote marks)". That's fine in the first chapter, but all the way through the book?!? The other thing I've found is that sometimes the author bends over backwards to keep it friendly by cracking jokes, which, again, is fine early in a book, but wears thin about halfway through. Just stick to your content! And Steven Bradley does that admirably well. In an e-mail exchange with the author, I mentioned how well he writes. He replied that he just writes the way he'd like to be talked to. Sorry, but it's more than that; this man has a gift for writing technical books.

What pleased me the most was that after working through the examples in the book, I finally started to get some inspiration about some ideas for the websites I need to work on.

Now for the publisher. I bought the ebook version of this book directly from Pearson rather than Amazon because they offered a steep, short-term discount. In the introduction, Mr. Bradley tells you how to get the exercises for the book by registering the book at Peachpit. This takes you to the informit.com website of Pearson, and lists all the books you've registered with them, and is supposed to have links associated with each book where downloads are available with the book. No link. I sent an e-mail to customer service on 1/21/2015 stating the relevant info about the book and that the download is missing. As it happens I've run into this problem before with this publisher, so I cc'd the author on the e-mail. I got a very quick response from the author, promising if the publisher was not responsive, he would send them to me directly. Two days later I got a reply from Informit Customer Service informing me once I let them know what bonus content I was looking for, they'd be back in contact with me! I was speechless! Needless to say, the author sent me the files immediately. But to cut this sad saga short, the link was finally posted February 10th, 20 days after I first contacted them. I finished the book and all the exercises before then! You can find plenty of other instances of this issue of mssing downloads from this particular publisher in other reviews on Amazon of other books by Peachpit and Adobe Press.

I believe this issue should be resolved by now for all purchasers of the book, so don't hesitate to buy it on the basis of the second half of this review, but if it's not, please add a comment to this review!

Great Source book for beginners!

I have been taking free courses through Microsoft virtual academy and was hoping to learn some new techniques with this book. Unfortunately I found that there wasn't a lot of new information. I was really hoping for more in depth examples. However had I come at the book with fresh eyes, and no prior knowledge of CSS capabilities these days it would definitely be a great resource! The books topic organization flow is also five stars in my opinion,
