THE FAMOUS FIVE

THE BEST FOR A FIRST READ!

Enid’s Famous Five books featuring Julian, Dick, George and Anne and Timmy the dog, were the catalyst which encouraged me to start reading more than 50 years ago. Thank you, Enid. The BBC, many public libraries, local authorities and alleged educational experts have been completely wrong about the worth of the Blyton works. I can remember having quite a lot of difficulty obtaining the original books as so many places would not stock them. The stories are great to read for their simplicity and straightforwardness.

When one did find copies of the book they were quite expensive all those years ago but great to own. I loved the letter on the back cover from Enid in some of the editions, and also the physical appearance of the book which I treasured as a youngster with the way the books were produced then which made them somehow much easier to read.

It’s a delight to read the stories again in middle age although recent editing has diminished some of the memories I have of the original editions and words used then (but I am now getting old).

Never mind… these books remain one of my best friends for life: they began my own reading adventure so do read these special adventures for yourselves.

About the Author
Sumner Locke Elliott was born in Sydney on 17 October 1917. His mother was the writer Helena Sumner Locke. She died of eclampsia the day after his birth, and the boy was raised by his aunts.

Elliott wrote his first play when he was twelve, and while he was still at school joined Sydney’s Independent Theatre. In 1942 he was drafted and served out much of the war as a typist in remote parts of Australia. But he was besotted with the theatre and with play writing.

Elliott went to the United States in 1948. Three years later his play Buy Me Blue Ribbons premiered on Broadway. He launched a prominent career writing plays for the television networks, and based himself in New York. He became an American citizen in 1955 and did not visit Australia again until 1974.

Elliott wrote ten novels in all. He won the Patrick White Literary Award in 1977. After a lifetime of concealing his homosexuality, he spent his final years living with his partner Whitfield Cook. Sumner Locke Elliott died in New York City in 1991.

Robyn Nevin AM has been a leading Australian actress for over fifty years and has directed for more than twenty-five years, directing for all state theatre companies. Robyn held the position of Associate Director with the Sydney and Melbourne theatre companies before being appointed Artistic Director of Queensland Theatre Company. Robyn was Artistic Director and CEO of Sydney Theatre Company from 1999 to 2007.

A litte gem

A motherless child, abandoned by her grieving father, grows up among her eccentric aunts, two of whom battle for custody and control of the child. The title refers to the family secrets that are discussed behind her back. The story is beautifully written. Eliot gets the child's voice right and viewpoint, which is difficult to do. After reading the book, I watched the film version. The book is SO much richer. Iti s filled with many themes, but is never ponderous.

This is really excellent. A moving story, characters that develop throughout the book, a bit of a secret, great descriptions of Sydney, a twist at the end AND it's loosely autobiographical - this book has everything. I loved it.

Superior writer and this is one of his best. This is a must read even if you have seen the film. Sumner Locke Elliott deserves to be rediscovered for his amazing talent and sophisticated novels.

This is a great book for those who are seriously interested in the Middle Ages. Historians, living-history-adepts and re-enactors all can find what they are looking for. There is a lot of information, perhaps even too much for non-professionals (pages and pages on what was found where, with detailed descriptions). On the other hand, the drawings are just as detailed and this makes it a wonderful book just to browse and 'look at the pictures'. For a non-native speaker of English the language may be a bit difficult at times.

So many things to love about this

A page-turning mystery full of family secrets, awkward relatives, believable romance and great humour. Protagonists were real but delightful (a big relief as I'm so sick of reading about characters I can't even like), and I foresee myself re-reading this often. I wish I could go in greater depth on the many nuanced things I appreciated about reading this but it would be full of spoilers - basically, a great, fun read worth much more than what it cost me

Fantastic, fun read!

Fun, light hearted mystery with a great cast of characters. The main character, Jay, is totally relatable and her Aunt Mimi is a trip. Her girlfriend Nicole is interesting and a little complex, like most women, but serves as a good foil for Jay. Their relationship is sexy and fun and they are really great together. And the mystery is great, too! I didn't have the killer figured out by the end so it was a surprise. I'm a big fan of Rae's work and this one definitely did not disappoint!

Six steps to ward off Alzheimer's

Essential for codgers; read at Mahwah Public Library.

Summary of key points; codgers at my age are very aware of the deadly effects of Alzheimer's, as we see our friends and relatives go away -- although they remain physically present:

STEP 1: Make exercise exciting. You may know that frequent exercise—particularly aerobic exercise, which promotes blood flow to the brain—is the most effective Alzheimer’s prevention strategy. Unfortunately, many people become bored and stop exercising.

Scientific evidence: Because exercise raises levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, it promotes the growth of new brain cells and may help prevent shrinkage of the hippocampus (a part of the brain involved in memory).

Most days Kosik spends 35 minutes on an elliptical trainer, followed by some weight .training. A recent 20-year study found that dancing reduced dementia risk more than any other type of exercise—perhaps because many types of dancing (such as tango, salsa and Zumba) involve learning new steps and aerobic activity.

STEP 2: Keep your eating plan simple. Emphasize antioxidant-rich foods (such as fruit and vegetables)…not too much red meat…and a limited amount of processed foods that are high in sugar, fat or additives.

Scientific evidence: Research has shown that people who consume more than four daily servings of vegetables have a 40% lower rate of cognitive decline than those who get less than one daily serving.

Kosik tries to eat more vegetables, particularly broccoli, cauliflower and other crucifers, but doesn't like them; he adds brain-healthy spices such as rosemary and turmeric.

STEP 3: Guard your sleep. During the day, harmful waste products accumulate in the brain. These wastes, including the amyloid protein that’s linked to Alzheimer’s, are mainly eliminated at night during deep (stages 3 and 4) sleep.

Scientific evidence: In a long-term Swedish study, men who reported poor sleep were 1.5 times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s than those with better sleep.

Kosik takes 10-minute naps during the day.

STEP 4: Don’t be a loner. Having regular social interaction is strongly associated with healthy aging.

Scientific evidence: Older adults who frequently spend time with others—for example, sharing meals and volunteering—have about a 70% lower rate of cognitive decline than those who don’t socialize much.

Kosik regularly Skypes, attends conferences and stays in touch with other scientists and postdoc students. Get a pet if you can care for it.

STEP 5: Stay calm. People who are often stressed are more likely to experience brain shrinkage.

Scientific evidence: In a three-year study of people with mild cognitive impairment (a condition that often precedes Alzheimer’s), those with severe anxiety had a 135% increased risk for Alzheimer’s, compared with those who were calmer.

Kosik goes for long walks.

Others: Have a positive mental attitude, deep breathing, yoga, tai chi, meditation, watch funny movies.

STEP 6: Push yourself intellectually.

Scientific evidence: In an important study, older adults (including those with a genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s) who frequently read, played board games or engaged in other mental activities were able to postpone the development of the disease by almost a decade.

But don’t fool yourself — Push your mental abilities—do math problems in your head, memorize a poem, become a tutor, etc.

Kosik does research in Latin America and is learning Spanish.

About the Author

ASWATH DAMODARAN is Professor of Finance at New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business. In addition, Damodaran teaches training courses in corporate finance and valuation at many leading investment banks. Excellent book with too many typos

I have just read this book from cover to cover and benefited from it greatly. The author has a very methodical approach to valuation and demonstrates the application of principles through many examples. The closest competitor is the book Valuation by McKinsey, and with this latest revision of his text, Damodaran has I believe reclaimed the lead. It is human nature to want clear easy answers, but quite often in financial forecasting and valuation there are multiple options, each with tradeoffs and judgment calls. Damodaran often lays out the choices, discusses the pros and cons, and leaves it to the reader to decide among the alternatives. He does provide many applied examples, so the reader can see these sorts of judgment calls being repeatedly made and put into practice. The author's website at NYU provides a wealth of market and financial information, and he periodically updates this data. This is enormously useful if you are going to teach a class from this book, which I am planning to do.

The author follows common academic practice (following Modigliani and Miller) of discounting interest tax shields at the cost of debt rather than the unlevered cost of capital. It seems much of the industry treats these cash flows as riskier and uses the unlevered cost of capital for discounting. This approach is also consistent with a constant-growth capital structure, which is often assumed in modeling the firm's future cash flows. The McKinsey book takes this approach as do I in teaching Advanced Corporate Finance. But this is a minor complaint.

My chief complaint with the book is that it is replete with typos. Many of them are grammatical in nature (article missing, verb tense is wrong, sentence fragment) and, while irritating, are rather harmless. Others, however, involve equations or numbers and serve to impede or derail the reader's understanding. For example, in one chapter alone (Chapter 7), there are errors in equations on pages 158, 169, and 176. As a professor, I (usually) have the ability to recognize these sorts of errors, but students likely will not. For this reason, I am only giving four stars to what otherwise should be a five-star book.

About the Author
Henry Miller (1891―1980) was one of the most controversial American novelists during his lifetime. His book, The Tropic of Cancer, was banned in the some U.S. states before being overruled by the Supreme Court. New Directions publishes several of his books.

A superb rant, very wry, a sardonic masterpiece

From page one of this book Henry Miller exacts his revenge on his unwelcome houseguest. This book is a superb rant, filled with some of Henry Miller's most brilliant and amusing caricatures. Henry Miller deftly swings between sweet admiration and praise for the object of his troubles, and outright disgust. Set in Big Sur, later in his life, it's a short, easy read, and doesn't contain the profanities that cause some people shy away from in Henry Miller's books. Highly Recommended for those who want to laugh out loud at Henry Miller's audacity and want to better understand HM's genius.

a more mature miller

This book, unlike Miller's "Tropic of Cancer" or "Tropic of Capricorn", follows a pretty standard form. By this i mean that unlike some of Miller's other work, there is a definite plot to this book; a definite beginning, middle and end. In addition, it lacks the surreal atmosphere of these other works. However, Miller makes up for for this with a superb demonstration of his story-telling abilities. Rather than writing fragmented adventures, Miller here writes a book that flows from beginning to end. In this way, he is able to chronical the relationship that he has with the novel's antagonist, as well as with his wife and daughter. Although the decriptions are not as elaborate as in some of Miller's other works, the imagery is still superior to most other writers. Overall, this is a more toned-down Miller than in his early years as a writer, but for it lacks in youthful lust, "A Devil in Paradise" makes up with crafty story-telling, crisp imagery, and a more focused energy.

Mr. Millers houseguest

What this book is one of the shortest that I can recall Miller writing but one of his funniest. People that take Miller as just an erotic writer dealing with baudy sex and escapades may be disappointed with this read. But for those that truly realize that Miller had a great sense of humor will laugh out loud with this book. It is a story about an old acquaintence named Conrad Moricand that and needs a place to stay. Miller sets him up in an attic/loft at the Big Sur residence and gives Moricand the utmost hospitality at his disposal. Over the course of time, Moricand offends every member of the household to the point where miller regrets ever letting him into his house. To read how Miller lets the reader see exactly what moricand is like and the descriptive language he uses is priceless and any student of writing should study this book for hints.
