A Magical Deck that delights the eye and the soul

This deck is designed beautifully, drawing on well-researched fairy lore, and employing wonderful artistry. The kit is well worth paying the extra money for, since there are many subtle variations on meaning drawn from the fabulous Celtic lore of the fairies. It is taking me places in my soul I did not even know existed. There is a depth of whimsy and abiding love that emanates from this deck and the book that are impossible to relate in words. If you love fairies and tarot, or are just curious about one or the other, or both, this kit is well worth the investment--it will take you on a magical voyage of discovery within yourself that you won't want to miss! And truly that is what the tarot, and the fairies are all about!

Beautiful fairies full of wisdom

First, I must say that I am fascinated by the art of Tarot. I have several decks, but I wouldn't say I am an expert. I'm more of an amateur, but I wanted to share my thoughts about what I really like about this particular deck.

I have a soft spot for all things fairies, so when I saw this deck on Amazon, I knew I wanted to add it to my collection. The kit comes with a book, the deck, and the little white booklet in a durable, hardcover box.

There are several things I like about this deck. The art captures the eye, naturally. Even better, the book explains in detail how all the graphics on the cards are there for a specific purpose. For example, The Fool card shows a child, a fairy, and a zero. The book explains the meanings of the symbols in relevance to the Celts and the Celtic culture, which is the whole point of the deck. I also like that the book has glossy pages with full color pictures of the cards and the symbols. The fairies on the cards are all G or PG-rated.

The meanings and explanations in the actual book are more in depth and thorough then those in the Little White Book. The suits are Cauldrons (cups), Stones (pentacles), Spears (wands), and Swords. The adjustment in suits to fit the theme of the cards was a creative move that works, in my opinion.

What I didn't like was the lack of reversed meanings for the cards. I looked in both the larger book and the LWB, but the meanings seemed to apply to the right-side-up version. I know that not all Tarot decks give the reversed meanings, but I prefer when they do. I guess because I am not an expert in the art as of yet.

If you like Tarot and fairies, then I think you'll be pleased with this deck. This kit is definitely one of the more unique ones on the market.

Unique, insightful and beautiful!

I adore these cards. The guidebook is insightful, giving a story behind each card with relevant meaning and application to everyday life. The cards themselves can also be read intuitively as they contain interesting symbolism and a unique feeling for each one. I recommend them to anyone interested in the Elemental Kingdom if you are looking for something a bit different.

Terrible, but often required by classes

This is a terrible book required by two of my classes. Many of the images look like they have been poorly copied 14 times (at least) and are very hard to read. On numerous occasions the instructor had to give out dimensions for homework assignments because no one could figure out what the text in the book was saying, and some assignments were handed out copies from an earlier edition...the same drawings, just less crap because they had been copied fewer times. There are also more than a few incorrect pieces of information scattered through the book...not too bad for a first or second edition but really pathetic for a 14th edition. I realize the reason for making new editions is to force people to buy new books and stop using the old ones...but they could at least fix the errors that people email them about. The book is also extremely outdated; a huge portion of it is dedicated to drafting by hand...not to understanding old drawings, but to actually making them. I am actually a bit angry with my school for using this book...given how outdated it is an how much worse than the just-as-outdated previous editions it is, it would make a lot more sense to require the 10th edition or something.

Note: if you have a class that requires this book, check to see if you will need it again in future classes before deciding to rent it.

About the Author
Jiang Hsieh, Ph.D., is the Chief Scientist at GE Healthcare and an adjunct professor in the Department of Medical Physics at University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has over 26 years of experience in medical imaging, holds over 160 U.S. patents, and has authored or co-authored more than 200 research articles, conference presentations, and book chapters. He taught short courses on x-ray computed tomography at SPIE Medical Imaging conferences, Radiology Society of North American annual meetings (RSNA), the IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference, AAPM annual meetings, and AAPM summer school. His research interests include tomographic reconstruction, medical image processing, image artifact identification and correction, and advanced CT applications.

Introduction to medical tomography (CT scanning)

I turned to this book for general information on tomography, as my actual interest is electron tomography in the transmission electron microscope (TEM). Within this 556 page, 12 chapter book is a useful introductory chapter on image reconstruction (Chapter 3, pp.55-117). Chapter 3 addresses such topics as the filtered backprojection algorithm, Radon and Fourier transforms, and digital computing considerations such as aliasing. The author uses equations as well as flow charts to help explain the calculation procedures and theory. It is also worth mentioning that this book also contains a chapter reviewing such mathematical concepts as Fourier transforms, convolution integrals, statistics, linear algebra, and x-ray Physics (Chapter 2, pp.23-53). The rest of the book is specific to CT scanning.

Looking for references in CT, buy this book first.

To be honest, I didn't buy this book from Amazon or any other seller for that matter as it was available to me through my school's library. I used this book as a basic reference and used it to find other more specific and technical references to my thesis works. I recommend this book to anybody specially those who have to study CT. However, it was organized in a simpler way so that anyone who has an interest can understand. It was to me like a mini encyclopedia of CT as this book bundled with many references that you might be looking for.

Long Unenlightening explanations

The book lacks mathematical descriptions. He opts for long explanations that I did not find enlightening. I would not recommend this book; instead, I would opt for the text by Kak and Slaney. It's much more clear, and an electronic copy can be found free on the Internet.

Vonnegut as context

Palm Sunday is exactly what it is advertised - an autobiographical collage. KV tells his life story through bits and pieces of short stories, interviews, and ancestral writings. It gives you insight into his motivations from various points of view. The origins of all the plots of all his novels are revealed through him recounting his life experiences, the people he knew, the things he's seen. I feel as if all his novels I've read were clues in some elaborate murder mystery, and the long sought missing link has suddenly been revealed, and I now understand the butler did it.

Solidly Average

It's hard to call this book anything but average, especially for Kurt Vonnegut. In fact, when it comes right down to it, it's even hard to call this a book. This is a collection of speeches and assorted writings that have been compiled and thrown together between 2 covers. There is some new material (mainly commentary) intermingled among these speeches and essays. That commentary is probably the most entertaining aspect of the whole book.
All in all this rates as an average of all the material included, and that average is no more or less than, well, thoroughly average. 3 stars. By giving it 3 stars I think it says the book is worth reading. But it's clearly not worth getting too excited about. No, this is not one of Vonnegut's greatest works. But it is interesting at spots.
In this book Vonnegut touches on all sorts of things, but as many seasoned KV readers will know, it would not be a vintage Vonnegut without mentioning Dresden, Indianapolis, and his son Mark's insanity. All 3 make numerous appearances in the book. It could probably be argued that the name of this book should be exactly that: Dresden, Indianapolis, and Mark's Insanity.
But it's not. It's called Palm Sunday for whatever reason. In it, he rates all of his works to date and I think he does a fair job doing so. For this one, he gives himself a C+, which is fair enough. He also said it took 6 years. If time is an indicator, I'll give him an A for effort.
Those interested in getting to know Vonnegut from the start should try The Sirens of Titan, Cat's Cradle, or Slaughterhouse-5. Those 3 are vintage Vonnegut and worth every good word ever expressed about them. Those who have read all of his fiction works and are looking to peer even deeper into his writings should indeed read this. But do so with the grain of knowledge that this is not his best collection of words.
As much as I have not praised this book it is still worth the read. But I try to paint a fair picture of who should read it. In a nutshell, people who have read many other Vonnegut works should read this one to complete the list of books he has written. Those new to Vonnegut should move on to something more well-crafted and ingenious.
My conclusion? Worth the read, but after you've done some other reading first.

It is as it is promised

This is simply "An Autobiographical Collage". A collection of Op-Ed pieces, speeches givin, short family tree and some things that had no where else to go. As a fan of Kurt, I own most of his books, and I had this one for 3 years before I read it because I wanted to read more of his fiction before I found out about the man. Some of the articles mention his past novels and it is helpful to have read them to get a true understanding of what he is talking about. It was refreshing to see that Kurt believes the worst book he ahs written is Slapstick, he gives it a D. I never liked that book, and now I feel like it is OK to not like it. All in all this is no more than a short attention span book that will fill 5 minutes here or there. If you have just a passing interest in Vonnegut, do not bother with this book. However if you are a big Vonnegut fan like me, you might want to pick this up and get a little insight into his warped mind.

Jay Jorgensen is an editor for Peterson’s Photographic magazine. He has written many celebrity profiles and his photography has been showcased in magazines such as People and TV Guide. He divides his time between Los Angeles and Palm Springs, California.

Numerous typos, grammatical errors distracting

I understand that this book's attraction for most people is the photos, but I'm frankly shocked by the number of obvious typos and grammatical errors in the text--at least one on every page! I also understand that not everyone will catch a dangling modifier or even subject-verb agreement in tricky sentences, but periods next to commas? Random question marks inside words? Periods in the middle of sentences? These errors are extremely distracting to the reader. I can't believe this book was allowed to go to press without at least one pass by an editor!

If you can manage to ignore the typos, you may find the placement of images occasionally mystifying, with photos not showing up until 6 or 8 pages after the costumes were described. And while I was hoping for insight into Edith Head's character and motivation, after a certain point most of the content is devoted to a litany of costume descriptions.

Edith Head's Career Highlighted

This much-awaited volume on Miss Head is an absolutely beautiful volume. I waited years to have a colossal book on her costumes much more than more information on her life which is available in other volumes.

While the book itself is a magnificent production, including the graphics, layout, photography and cover fabric, there are a few aspects that go wanting, but do not detract from anything but the highest recommendation.

I find that the pictorial coverage is most stingy with her designs for The Ten Commandments, even though the picture of Anne Baxter's elegant and stylized portrayal of Nefretiri is captured by the one and only photograph devoted to this motion picture.

Of special note is that despite the computer and editorial staff, the text which is sufficient except again for The Ten Commandments, has numerous spelling, syntactical, and possibly typographical errors. While I think nobody can attest to any accuracy regarding her early years, nor certain facts regarding her most personal interior life, the text is informative, and not burdensome in presentation of her typical daily activities. It is to the point!

It is especially a noteworthy book because we are treated to photography that we have never seen in other books about this most highly-acclaimed and most sensitive artist. While one may find that she may have been highly protective of her billing and her Oscars, one understands that it was out of necessity, due both to her formulative years and instinct to guard and protect her artistry. Had she not guarded her designs, one can only imagine that the system in which she worked could have concealed her rightful acknowledgements.

I applaud both Edith Head for giving so many of us such magnificent pleasure over so many decades, and for the author and staff who made this book happen.

Could have been MUCH MUCH better

I suppose any book documenting Edith Head's 50 year career in Hollywood is better than nothing, but this one doesn't even try to be in depth. It is a disappointment on a number of levels.

This coffee table book is part biography of Edith, part fashion bio of the costumes she made for films, part gossip dropper of the lives on the people she worked with. Don't be fooled by the books height or size. You aren't getting your money's worth as most of the pages are "filler."

I purchased this book back in January, but held back posting a review until I finished reading it. I kept hoping, thinking, the book would improve. But the longer I examined it, the more faults I found with it.

Firstly, Edith's name is linked to over 1000+ films; of that 500 or so, she personally designed and costumed herself. From that, we get only a scant 100 or less films. Also, for reasons I can't fathom, we are shown pictures from films Edith had nothing to do with (where she received name credit, but didn't actually design the costumes for). While it's neccesary, of course, to address the Givenchy and "The Sting" controversies, among others, it's a waste of space to include pictures of costumes she didn't design.

Compounding this problem is the many, many, many of the costumes are described and not shown. With the exception of 3-6 films, most films are alloted only 1 or 2 pictures. In addition, most of the shots are publicity shots and don't always show the costumes at their best angle to be able to study and admire the craftmanship Edith put into making them.

Then, we come to pictures of Edith. There are 20+ (I counted) pictures of her sketching or looking at sketches. One or two would have sufficed, given that NO imagination went into choosing pictures of her where her personality came through. Also, there are too many bland/boring shots of her looking blankly into camera, or posing beside someone. The author keeps telling us she had a funny, vibrant side. That her off-duty wardrobe was relaxed but stylish. But we get only a few types of pictures. The pictures of Edith chosen don't give insight into Edith as either an artist or a personality. (Hell, rather than given us 20+ pictures of Edith sketching...they could have given us instead more pictures of her costumes or the actual sketches themselves.)

Spelling and grammar are also very bad. Mistakes are on every page. If this was a well-thought out photography book, those mistakes would be forgivable. However, this book isn't even average. And the fact that book didn't go through a spell-check process before going into print makes it feel even cheaper still.

Also, Jorgensen isn't much of a writer. To make the book look like it has more substance than it actually does, the border extends an inch in, and the sentences are double-spaced. There are also many block quotes. I understand he's no fashion insider. However, his name dropping and gossipy tone about Hollywood's Who's Who doesn't contribute to my understanding about Edith. It only makes it more apparent that he doesn't know what he's talking about.

This book falls into the "What were they thinking?" category. It had such potential but it's such a missed opportunity. It's lackluster when it should be shiny. It's redundant where it should be exciting. It's dimissive when it should be awe-inspiring. If you do buy a copy of this book, I suggest you get it on bargain. Do NOT pay full price for this. It's not worth it.

Here's hoping a more thoughtful, more thought-out Edith Head coffee table book will come on in the future and replace this dreck pile.

very helpful little book.

Reading this book, I'm seeing that the authors require their students to create their own pocket guides, and as a nutrition student who will be graduating in a month I've found this to be tremendously helpful, well organized. I plan to put my own notes into the book to make it more useful to my uses for it. I can't compare it to other options, since this is my first one, but I'm very happy with it and it's a great learning tool. It has a flap to use as a bookmark, and although yes, the pages are thin, it's not much different than using a bible. The cover protects the pages very well.

I bought this before starting my dietetic internship. I carried in in my lab coat throughout every rotation. It was very helpful, as it outlined every major section of clinical nutrition and MNT.

Covers A LOT!

I got this book in edition to 5 other pocket books. My clinical rotation gave me a lot of information for that particular hospital, and I still referred to this book A LOT! It has almost everything. I did find the RDs thought some of the quick calorie estimates to be a bit high and liberalized. My preceptors were more on the conservative side. It really depends on the hospital/RD you are with. Overall, I know I will still be using this while I get established and am very happy with it.

Richard R. Janis, a practicing professional engineer for 30 years, is engaged in research, evaluation and design of building environmental systems and sustainable energy technology. He has managed most of WTA's master planning and high-tech projects, responsible for establishing design criteria, systems selection, utility requirements, design implementation, and commissioning. Innovative concepts in laboratory and data center projects have won national design awards. In addition to project accomplishments he is author of Mechanical and Electrical Systems in Buildings (Prentice Hall 2004, 2001, 1997) and numerous articles on topical issues in the field. He has taught for over thirty years at Washington University, St. Louis. As an adjunct Associate Professor, Mr. Janis currently teaches building technology and sustainable design courses including "Building Systems," "and "Climate and Light" at Washington University.

Great book for newbies!

If ur stepping into the building services industry, this book will be a comprehensive packaged info for your reading pleasure. Includes lotsa real-life diagrams, plan routings, concepts and explanation. It's 4am over here in Singapore and I've just finished reading one of the topics, just imagine how attractive the contents this book has! However, the only and regretable drawback is: the units are empirical which make it very difficult for me for in my country, we use SI metric units.

Very good book. Helps you understand the systems inside (and outside) of buildings in use everyday that most folks don't have a clue about. If you are interested in understanding how your building equipment functions this is a good book for you. Down to earth and well written. Recommend to property management personnel.

Mechanical and Electrical Systems in Buildings (3rd Edition)

This book is terrible. If you are a certified HVAC specialist, it is for you. However, if you are new to this then it is a total waste of money. Explanation is bad, example are nowhere relate to the section discussed. And worst of all, there is no answer keys. You will not have a clue if you are correct or not. Every chapter there are as least half of the review question are calculations, yet in each chapter there will be probably one page showing how calculation is done. Example one of the simplest thing:

COP = Cooling Effect / Power Input. If you look up the index, you cannot find the word "cooling effect", find out whichever chapter they discuss, or show you how to calculate the "cooling effect".

You are in luck if you do not have class that uses this book. You have bad luck if you have a "good" teacher that using this book. You are doom if you have a "bad" teacher who using this book, might as well drop it. Waste of time and money.

Great book, disagreed with a few points, overall awesome

I'm a little over halfway with this recently published book, which I'm really enjoying so far - and I expect to enjoy it all the way to the end. A lot of great and unexpected insights here, and it seems that the authors did a good job explaining extremely complex algorithms and showing their applicability to real life (though it's hard for me to tell how good their explanations are to a novice, since I'm an expert in the field - I have two masters in Computer Science and working on my PhD, and was familiar with 90% of the algorithms described before opening the book).

My biggest quibble with this book (and the reason they lost a star) is that I noticed a few annoying/sloppy inaccuracies, which makes [made! - see below for updates] me ever so slightly doubt the accuracy and veracity of other areas of the book that I'm less familiar with. The other issue is the boldness of their (otherwise very interesting) conjectures.

For example, the authors misunderstand and misquote the 2-minute rule from David Allen's Getting Things Done, claiming the rule tells you to perform any less than 2-min task immediately when it occurs to you - and essentially simplifying the entire GTD system into the 2-min rule, which is in fact a tiny part of GTD (pg. 105-106). In fact, however, Allen does not suggest that at all - that would distract you from whatever you're currently engaged with, i.e. require a context switch (the costs of which the authors discuss at length). Instead, you should write that task down and add it to your intray, just like any other task. The 2-minute rule is applied later, while clearing your intray (which can be anytime in the next 48 hours). The point of the 2-minute rule is that the time spent on adding this task into your otherwise-extremely-flexible GTD system, and then tracking it in said system, would take longer than two minutes. This type of tracking is akin to what the authors refer to as "meta-work", and thus performing the 2-min task at inbox clearing time saves you an equal or greater amount of meta-work later. This is completely in line with the type of scheduling suggestions that the authors discuss. I'm not familiar with the other popular advice books the authors quote in the scheduling chapter or in the others chapters (e.g. the empty-your-closet type books they discuss in chapter 4), so I don't know if there are other such mischaracterizations, but it makes me suspect there might be. And I get that they're trying to differentiate their own advice from "all the other pop books out there", but if they're going to explicitly cite other books, they should try not to misrepresent them.

Also, when discussing the Gittins rule and the multi-armed bandit problem, they say that a machine with a 0-0 record has "a Gittins index of 0.7029. In other words, something you have no experience with whatsoever is more attractive than a machine that you know pays out seven times out of ten!" (pg. 40). However, their own table on the same page clearly shows that a machine with a 7-3 record has a Gittins index of 0.7187, making such a machine ever so slightly superior to a 0-0 one. After some more reading I realized that what they meant was that a machine with a 0-0 record and *uncertainty* is better than a *certain payout* of 70% (i.e. guaranteed to payout 7 out of 10), but that was not what the text implied.

To be clear, these inaccuracies in and of themselves aren't huge - but they planted a seed of doubt in my mind [which is not as big anymore - see below] as to whether there were other such misrepresentations or inaccuracies in the book that I simply hadn't caught, and detracted from my enjoyment of the book.

The other concern I have with this book is that several chapters end with provocative suggestions that aren't actually empirically-backed. These conjectures are cool, but I'd have liked to see scientists be more careful about making such bold claims, or at least couching them in the need for more research to establish whether they were entirely true. One example here was the discussion about the decline of aging supposedly being a result of simply having a larger history to remember (pgs 103-104). This is a fascinating conjecture, and one that deserves to be studied properly, but they are basing it on some research work that was not age-related. I suspect the authors may be on to something, at least in the context of "normal aging" cognitive decline as opposed to, say, alzheimer-related decline. However, as stated in the text, the conjectures are stated a bit too strongly for my tastes ("But as you age, and begin to experience these sporadic latencies, take heart: the length of the delay is partly an indicator of the extent of your experience.", pg 104). I'd hate to see anyone making decisions based on them - potentially missing an earlier diagnosis, say, of alzheimer's, because the authors claimed that cognitive decline is totally normal.

Quibbles and concerns notwithstanding, I'm definitely enjoying the book and I think it's a great addition to the new genre of what's being called by some "science-help". It's also a good read for people who are tired of the same-old, and thirsty for some advice that's off the beaten path.

UPDATE:
The rest of the book was as good as I expected.
Additionally, I sent this review to the lead author (Brian Christian) in case he wanted to address these issues. I was delighted to receive a very thoughtful response from him! They will be fixing the Gittens rule description in the paperback edition, to make it clearer to the reader. The author respectfully disagreed with me on the other two issues (GTD 2 minute rule & cognitive decline).
Given what I saw in the email, I'd say the intentions behind the book definitely merit 5 stars (even though I still disagree on their presentation of those two topics). However, I'll leave the original title & rating of 4 stars as it stands for the original hardcover edition, and for consistency's sake. As I originally said, the book stands as an excellent addition to the genre, and also likely as a great first exposure into Computer Science if you've never had any.

2nd update:
Apparently, this review is now listed as the top most helpful review on Amazon (cool!). The book has been so successful that the first author (Brian Christian) recently informed me that the book is now on its third printing, which means that the Gittins index issue mentioned above is now fixed in the current and future editions. As for the other issues I had, they are more subjective in nature, and not large enough in and of themselves to merit the original (harsher) title of the review. Again, for completeness' sake and to avoid rewriting history, I leave the original review as its stands and the original title is listed below the new title, with only a few comments in brackets leading readers to these updates in the bottom.

A superior guide to the science of living well

The most thoughtful and meaningful book I have read since Daniel Kahneman’s “Thinking Fast and Slow”. It extends that work by detailing the extensive computer science research that has been done which illuminates those techniques (i.e., algorithms) that support our brain’s natural capabilities in order to make the best possible life decisions. It shows when it pays to be precise and rigorous and when the best choices can be made by less stringent analyses. And where “winging it” or ‘using gut feelings’ may indeed produce the best results. The authors accomplish these valuable lessons through clear explanatory writing, pertinent examples drawn from both computer design and the real (human) world and a fine sense of humor.
In addition to wonderfully fulfilling its stated goal the book also provides the reader with a solid overview of the current state of computer design and architecture and some strong validations of the received wisdom that has come to us from philosophy and religion.

Awesome! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As an engineer with some programming experience I am drawn to algorithms and mathematics, and not only did this book put various algorithms in historical context, but it demonstrated how they can be applied to life while adding a philosophical twist. The authors are skilled at explaining difficult subjects using easy to understand language that builds from simple to complex at just the right pace, all the while using real world examples. Not only did I enjoy the read, but I learned new things that often prompted tangent explorations to learn more. The book left me with a hunger to delve deeper into many of the subjects discussed, and made me challenge, and sometimes affirm, many of my own philosophical beliefs. Well done!
